SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University's football team got into a shootout Saturday afternoon with nationally-ranked Bloomsburg University but wound up a few bullets short in its bid for a second upset win in the last three weeks.

The Rock (6-5), who knocked off then-No. 14 California (Pa.) Oct. 27, outgained 12th-ranked Bloomsburg (10-1) by a 571-457 margin in total yardage Saturday, but dropped a 49-41 decision in the season finale and Senior Day game at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

In the end, The Rock offense shot itself in the proverbial foot as two fumbles lost inside the Bloomsburg 20-yard line and a blocked punt the guests turned into a touchdown proved to be the difference.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jared Buck completed 30 of 45 passes for a season-high 341 yards and one touchdown and ran for two TDs to lead The Rock offensive attack.

Buck's passing yardage total was the third-best in Rock football history behind only John Linhart's 502-yard effort Nov. 7, 1992 vs. Clarion and Cody Endres' 397 yards Oct. 15, 2011 at Lock Haven.

Senior running back Akeem Satterfield rushed for a season-high 181 yards on 29 carries and scored one TD to lead a 230-yard Rock ground game.

Freshman slot receiver Jaimire Dutrieuille caught a game-high seven passes for 71 yards, both of which were also season-high totals for him, and also had a 16-yard rushing TD. Junior wide receiver John Schademan caught six passes for 67 yards and freshman wideout Andrew Bridgeforth caught six passes for 59 yards, including a 20-yard TD toss from Buck.

Junior linebacker Gary Allen recorded a team-high10 tackles to lead The Rock's defense, which held Bloomsburg to one second-half touchdown after allowing 42 first-half points.

Bloomsburg's offensive attack featured 183 yards on 24 carries and four TDs by junior running back Franklyn Quiteh, the leading rusher in the nation, and a 10-of-17, 185-yard, two-TD passing performance by redshirt fresman quarterback Tim Kelly.

The  Huskies scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and six of seven first-half drives, but then added only one TD in five second-half possessions.

The Rock, meanwhile, scored on only two of eight first-half drives before converting four of five second-half possessions into touchdowns and twice trimming what was a 29-point (42-13) halftime deficit to only eight points on two occasions.

The second and final one-possession deficit of the final half came with 45 seconds left to play as a result of a 20-yard TD toss from Buck to Bridgeforth. Bloomsburg recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the remaining time to ice the win.

Bloomsburg moved 64 and 63 yards, respectively, on its first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead with 5:57 left in the first quarter of action. Both drives included six plays from scrimmage.

Kelly connected with Ryan Dickerson for a 35-yard TD pass to cap the first scoring drive before Quiteh scored on a one-yard run to culminate the second drive.

The Rock responded to the second Bloomsburg TD drive with a 13-play, 68-yard march of their own to trim the margin to 14-6 with 1:52 left in the first quarter. Buck capped the drive with an eight-yard run. Senior kicking specialist Kurt Brackman's extra-point try was blocked.

Brackman bounced back from that failed attempt to successfully boot the extra point on each of The Rock's final six scoring drives.

Bloomsburg came right back after The Rock's first TD to expand its lead to 21-6 with a five-play, 69-yard scoring drive

Buck hit redshirt sophomore wide receiver Ken Amos for a 50-yard gain to the Bloomsburg 11-yard line on the first play of the ensuing drive, but Amos lost control of the ball on a fumble to snuff out the potential scoring drive.

Bloomsburg gave the ball right back to SRU three plays later as redshirt sophomore cornerback Admire Carter picked Kelly off at The Rock 45. That set up SRU's second scoring drive, a nine-play, 60-yard march capped off by a seven-yard sprint by Buck that trimmed the Huskies' lead to 21-13 with 10:01 left in the second quarter.

That would prove to be the final points scored by The Rock in the first half, though, as Bloomsburg recorded three unanswered TDs to take a 42-13 lead into the intermission.

Quiteh capped the first of those scoring drives with a seven-yard run at the 7:20 mark of the second quarter that made it a 28-13 score.

The Rock threatened to answer that TD drive with one of their own, but the march ended prematurely as Satterfield lost a fumble at the Bloomsburg 15 with 6:21 left in the opening half.

Bloomsburg added salt to the wound when it marched 85 yards in six plays on the ensuing possession to push its lead to 35-13. Kelly connected with Kyle Fisher for a 41-yard TD pass to cap the drive.

The final points of the first half came on an 18-yard return of a blocked punt by Bloomsburg's Larry Webster with 2:29 left in the second stanza.

Bloomsburg had a chance to expand upon its 42-13 halftime advantage on the opening drive of the second half, but an 11-play, 61-yard drive was stopped at The Rock 14. Dan Fisher's 31-yard field goal attempt sailed wide to the left of the upright to leave the score at 42-13.

The Rock offense rode the momentum of that stand by the defense to march 80 yards in 10 plays and trim the margin to 42-20 with 6:15 left in the third period. Redshirt freshman Brett Crenshaw cashed the drive into points with a three-yard TD run.

Approximately seven minutes later, The Rock offense was back on the attack thanks to an interception by sophomore safety Austin Miele at midfield. Dutrieuille sprinted 16 yards on the sixth play of the ensuing drive to cap a 49-yard drive that cut the Bloomsburg lead to 42-27 with 13:20 left to play in the game.

The Rock defense stood tall again on the next Bloomsburg possession and forced the guests to punt the ball away, which set up an eight-play, 89-yard scoring drive by The Rock offense. That march, capped by a 12-yard TD run by Satterfield, cut the gap to only eight points, 42-34, with 7:40 remaining in the game.

With their lead in serious jeopardy, Bloomsburg went 63 yards in six plays on the ensuing drive to score what turned out to be the game-winning points. Quiteh capped the drive with a 21-yard jaunt at the 5:04 mark.

Down by a 49-34 score, The Rock offense came right back to march 89 yards in 17 plays to again make the deficit only eight points. Buck's pass to Bridgeforth climaxed the drive with 0:45 left to play.

Bloomsburg then recovered the onside kick and ran out the remaining time to ice the win.
