INDIANA,Pa. – Hosting Indiana University of Pa. rode a two-headed rushing monster to a 33-16 victory Saturday afternoon over Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division football action at George P. Miller Stadium.
Harvie Tuck rushed for 233 yards and one touchdown and De'Antwan Williams added 158 yards and two TDs to lead a 388-yard rushing effort by the Crimson Hawks (5-1 overall, 2-1 PSAC-W), who finished the game with a 486-238 total yardage advantage. Brett Ullman booted four field goals and three extra points to round out the winners' scoring attack.
Junior quarterback
Nigel Barksdale came off the bench to pass for 98 yards and rush for 57 yards to lead SRU's offensive attack. Redshirt freshman running back
Brett Crenshaw (3 yards) and freshman
Jaimire Dutrieuille (2 yards) each scored one rushing TD for The Rock (2-4, 1-2 PSAC-W), while senior
Kurt Brackman booted a 28-yard field goal.
Barksdale completed six of 16 pass attempts in relief of starter
Jared Buck, but also threw two interceptions and was sacked four times.
Buck, who began his collegiate career at Indiana and transferred to SRU prior to the 2011 season, completed three of seven passes for 20 yards and threw one interception before leaving the game with an injury late in the second quarter of action.
Junior slot receiver
LaQuinn Stephens-Howling caught three passes for 33 yards and classmate
John Schademan had two catches for 53 yards, including a 48-yard hookup with Barksdale midway through the fourth quarter.
The Barksdale-to-Schademan completion gave SRU a first-and-goal at the Indiana 6-yard line with approximately four minutes left to play in the game, but The Rock offense squandered the scoring opportunity.
Brackman's field goal and Crenshaw's TD run came on back-to-back Rock possessions and gave the guests a short-lived 9-6 advantage with 11:20 left to play in the first half of action.
The Rock defense stiffened deep in its own territory and forced Indiana to settle for a field goal on each of the hosts' first two offensive series of the game, then forced the Crimson Hawks to punt on their third possession to set the stage for the back-to-back scores by the Green and White offense.
Trailing by the 9-6 score, Indiana scored points on five of its next six possessions to take away any suspense as to the outcome of the game.
But, to its credit, The Rock defense also held the hosts, who held a 27-9 lead at halftime, to a pair of field goals in the final two quarters of action.
Brackman's field goal with five seconds left to play in the first quarter capped a seven-play, 65-yard Rock scoring drive and trimmed Indiana's lead to 6-3.
The Rock offense got the ball back in good field position when, after The Rock defense stood tall and forced Indiana to punt on the ensuing drive, Crimson Hawk punter Pat Smith's knee touched down at the hosts' 39-yard line while he was catching a low snap from ceter.
The Rock offense converted the opportunity into points six plays later when Crenshaw burst into the end zone from three yards out. Brackman's was unsuccessful on the extra-point kick attempt, so the score stood at 9-6 in favor of the guests.
Undaunted, Indiana scored touchdowns on its next three possessions to close out the first half of action.
The Rock got the ball to open the second half and marched 75 yards in 12 plays to trim the hosts' lead to 27-16 with 9:32 left in the third period. Dutrieuille's TD run capped the drive and Brackman tacked on the extra point.
Ullman kicked a 40-yard field goal with 4:50 left in the third period and added a 19-yard three-pointer with 8:10 left to play to conclude the game's scoring.
The loss was SRU's third straight this fall and extended its current road-game losing streak to five games.
The Rock will play a second consecutive road game next Saturday when they travel to Clarion for a 1 p.m. PSAC-West game.
