"The Rock football program and college football as a whole lost a great man with the passing of Joe Daniels," SRU Head Football Coach
George Mihalik said upon learning of Daniels' passing. "Joe spent many years in our profession, but he always 'bled Green' as a former Rock football student athlete and member of 'Charlie's Boys.' He was a great friend and ally to me and our entire coaching staff over the years. We will truly miss him."
A 1964 graduate of Slippery Rock and member of Rock football teams coached by Charles Godlasky, Daniels served over 40 years as a collegiate and professional football coach and administrator, most recently as quarterbacks coach at Ohio State University from 2001-09.
“Joe had a positive impact on everyone he met," Gene Smith, Ohio State director of athletics, said in a statement released by the OSU sports information office. "There are hundreds of former and current football players who are blessed because of the relationship they had with Joe. It was an honor to be in his presence and we thank him for what he gave Buckeye Nation while he was a coach and administrator. Our hearts and prayers are with his wife Kathy, son Matt, daughter Kaitlin, daughter-in-law Jenny and the entire Daniels family.”
"What a great, great human being Joe Daniels was," Bob Tucker, former Ohio State assistant coach and program administrator, said. "He was a wonderful father, coach and friend to so many people. Everyone in the coaching profession knew who Joe was and asked about Joe."
“The things that stand out to me were Joe's sense of humor and the way he approached the last five years," Jim Heacock, Ohio State defensive coordinator, said. "He was always upbeat. Everything was always good. He was an amazing man and you won't find any better quality of person than Joe Daniels."
Among the players Daniels tutored were former University of Pittsburgh and NFL Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino and former Ohio State QB Troy Smith, the 2006 recipient of the Heisman Trophy as the nation's top football player.
Daniels also mentored Craig Krenzel during OSU's 2002 national championship season and was the lead recruiter for Terrelle Pryor, who when he signed a National Letter of Intent with OSU in March 2008 was considered the No. 1 overall prospect in the nation. He also coached NFL standouts such as Ken O'Brien, Andre Reed and Ozzie Newsome.
A native of Bethel Park, Daniels was a running back at Slippery Rock before beginning his coaching career. That journey took him through the ranks, working at Boston College, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati in college and with the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills and New York Jets in the NFL.
