Final statistics

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The 22nd-ranked Slippery Rock University football team drove a 4x4 to a 48-27 victory Saturday afternoon over hosting Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action.

Senior wide receiver Devin Goda caught four touchdown passes for 225 yards, both of which were school-record totals, and senior quarterback Cody Endres passed for four touchdowns and 397 yards to propel The Rock to its seventh win in eight games this fall and fifth in as many PSAC-West games.

Endres' passing yardage total was the second-highest ever recorded by a Rock quarterback, behind only John Linhart's 502-yard performance Nov. 7, 1992 vs. Clarion.

With Saturday's win, The Rock remained alone atop the division standings.

Saturday's loss was the sixth of the season for Lock Haven, which fell to 0-4 in division action.

Goda, who caught a game-high nine passes in the game, was on the receiving end of 38- and 21-yard TD tosses from Endres. He also caught 43- and 32-yard TD passes from backup quarterback Jared Buck to break the SRU single-game TD catches record previously held by All-America performer Greg Hopkins with three vs. Lock Haven in 1994.

Goda's pass receiving yardage total Saturday bettered the previous school record of 202 set by Hopkins vs. Clarion in 1992.

Endres, who finished Saturday's game with 23 completions in 31 attempts, also hit redshirt sophomore wide receiver Mike Bongivengo for 40- and 33-yard scores to increase his season TD tosses total to 15.

The Rock, who took a 34-0 lead before Lock Haven got on the scoreboard, outgained the hosts by a 564-297 margin in total yards behind a 488-yard passing attack. Buck was a perfect 4-for-4 passing for 91 yards and two TDs in relief of Endres, while third-team signal-caller Ryan Sabo was 0-for-2 passing.

LaQuinn Stephens-Howling was The Rock's No. 2 receiver in the game with five catches for 47 yards. Bongivengo's TD catches, which covered a total of 73 yards, were his only receptions of the game. Starting running back Jimmy Zubik had three catches for 50 yards.

Buck was The Rock's leading rusher with 44 yards on two carries. Zubik had 21 yards on eight carries and Stephens-Howling 13 yards on seven carries. All told, The Rock had 76 rushing yards on 25 carries against the lowest-ranked rushing defense, which entered the game allowing 244.5 total yards per game.

Lock Haven passed for 256 yards and rushed for 73 against the nation's top-ranked defense. Backup quarterback Jarrett Kratzer was 15-of-20 passing for 157 yards and three TDs, while starting QB Jarryd Burkett was 9-of-12 for 99 yards with no TDs.

Brandon Brader, the No. 8 rusher in the conference (63 yards per game), finishe with 56 yards on 18 carries Saturday.

One statistic that did not please Rock head coach George Mihalik was the 141 yards on 15 penalties stepped off against his team. The Green and White were penalized five times for 66 yards in the final period alone. Lock Haven was penalized four times for 35 yards in the entire game.

The Rock, who scored points on their first six possessions of the game, generated 255 yards in total offense in the first half of action behind 239 passing yards by Endres (14-of-22, one TD pass, one interception). Goda caught four passes for 100 yards, including a 38-yard TD toss from Endres early in the second quarter.

SRU marched 70 yards in 12 plays on its first possession of the game, but had to settle for a 31-yard field goal by junior kicking specialist Kurt Brackman with 6:24 left in the first quarter.

Endres and Goda hooked up for their 38-yard TD to cap SRU's second drive, a five-play, 80-yard march. Brackman tacked on the extra-point kick to give The Rock a 10-0 lead with 13:41 left in the second quarter.

A 26-yard field goal by Brackman with 8:27 left before halftime capped a seven-play, 40-yard scoring drive that pushed The Rock's lead to 13-0.

The Rock expanded its lead to 34-0 with TD drives on each of their first three second-half possessions.

Endres and Goda connected for their second TD, a 21-yarder with 10:55 left in the third period, to cap a 72-yard drive. Brackman's PAT kick made the score 20-0.

Endres and Bongivengo then hooked up for touchdowns on back-to-back possessions to push the margin to 34-0. The first of the TD passes covered 40 yards and capped a five-play, 64-yard drive. The second Endres-to-Bongivengo TD pass covered 33 yards and came one play after senior linebacker Zach Sheridan recovered a Lock Haven fumble at the hosts' 33-yard line. Brackman kicked the PAT after both TDs.

Lock Haven averted the shutout by driving 60 yards in seven plays and scoring a TD with 1:31 left in the third quarter, Kratzer hitting Jay Hartman for a seven-yard score.

Undaunted, The Rock, with Buck at the controls, moved 46 yards in five plays to push the lead to 41-7 with 13:49 left to play in the game. Goda capped the drive with his third TD catch of the game, a 43-yard toss from Buck.

Lock Haven came right back with a 10-play, 67-yard drive four minutes later to trim the margin to 41-14 with 9:15 left to play. Hartman and Kratzer again hooked up for the TD, this time covering six yards on the scoring play.

Goda's fourth TD of the game on a 32-yard pass from Buck with 7:26 left to play accounted for the final Rock points and gave SRU a 48-14 lead with 7:26 remaining. The scoring drive included three plays and 69 yards.

Lock Haven cut the margin to 48-21 with a 25-yard blocked punt return for a TD by Ian Smith with 4:41 left, then closed out the scoring with a nine-play, 92-yard drive. Kratzer connected with Josh Livelsberger for a 10-yard TD to cap the drive.

The Rock, winners of five straight games, close out their home schedule next Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against defending conference champion Mercyhurst College at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
