Rock football adds 15 newcomers

The newest members of the Green and White include Jeff Dobbins, ranked as the No. 5 linebacker in the state by Scout.com and first-team all-state return specialist Admire Carter

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University Head Football Coach George Mihalik announced Wednesday that 15 former high school standouts have joined The Rock program.

Headlining the list of newcomers to the Green and White is Jeff Dobbins from Bishop Canevin High School in PIttsburgh, who was ranked as the No. 5 linebacker in the state by Scout.com.

Dobbins (6-foot-1, 230 pounds), ranked 102nd nationally by Scout.com, was ranked behind only players who signed National Letters of Intent Wednesday with Penn State, Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Temple among Pennsylvania linebackers.

Dobbins is joined on the Rock's newcomers list by first-team all-state return specialist Admire Carter (5-10, 170), who scored 30 career touchdowns for Beaver Falls High School.

Other standouts among The Rock's recruits were North Allegheny High School linebacker Gary Allen (6-0, 210), the son of former Rock standout Rick Allen; Freeport High School linebacker Darius Frantz (6-4, 215), Keystone Oaks High School defensive lineman Max Kielbasa (6-3, 265) and Mount Lebanon High School offensive lineman Bill Whitaker (6-5, 325).

Dobbins is one of two Bishop Canevin products who joined The Rock. A pair of players from General McLane High School in Edinboro were also included on the list of Rock newcomers.

Here are thumbnail looks at the newest additions to The Rock:

GARY ALLEN (6-0, 210, linebacker, North Allegheny H.S.) "is a physical hitter who brings a relentless attitude to the defense,” Coach Mihalik said. Allen recorded 109 total tackles last fall en route to PSFCA West All-Star, PNACA All-Star and first-team all-conference honors. A team captain in his senior season, he was a three-year letterwinner and two-year starters at NA.

RYAN ALLEN (6-0, 205, running back, Plum H.S.) is “a powerful player who doesn't shy away from contact. He's a hard, tough runner,” Coach Mihalik said. Allen rushed for 660 yards and six touchdowns as a senior en route to earning honorable mention all-conference and Valley Dispatch All-Star honors. He was a three-year letterwinner at Plum.

ADMIRE CARTER (5-10, 170, athlete, Beaver Falls H.S.) has the quickness and speed that allows him to be a big-play game-changer, Coach Mihalik said. “He could have an immediate impact on our program.” A first-team all-state selection as a return specialist, Carter earned Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “Fab 22 West” honors as a senior and was a two-time all-conference selection as both a wide receiver and defensive back. He recorded 14 interceptions in his scholastic career and was a three-time all-conference performer in baseball.

ISAIAH COLEMAN (6-2, 215, defensive back, Lawrence [N.J.] H.S.) has “a rare combination of athleticism and aggressive style of play,” Coach Mihalik said. Coleman earned first-team all-conference last fall, when he recorded 96 total tackles as a team captain.

JEFF DOBBINS (6-1, 230, linebacker, Pittsburgh Bishop Canevin H.S.) “has a great combination of speed and power, along with a tenacious physical attitude,” Coach Mihalik said. In addition to his Scout.com honors, Dobbins earned a first-team all-conference honor as a senior after recording 90 total tackles last fall.

AKEEM FIELDS (6-2, 230, defensive end, Hickory H.S.) "will be a great edge pass rusher," Coach Mihalik said. "He has a good combination of size and speed.” A first-team all-conference selection last fall and four-year starter, Fields set the school career record for quarterback sacks.

DARIUS FRANTZ (6-4, 215, linebacker, Freeport H.S.) is a “tall, rangy, athletic player,” Coach Mihalik said. “His versatility will cause matchup problems for a lot of offenses.” Frantz was the Allegheny Conference Defensive Player of the Year last fall after earning first-team all-conference honors for the second straight season.

MAX KIELBASA (6-3, 265, defensive tackle, Keystone Oaks H.S.) has "exceptional strength combined with quickness and a physical style of play," according to Coach Mihalik. "He has an opportunity to play for us right away in his first year.” Kielbasa earned first-team all-conference honors in each of his final two seasons and was a 2009 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette "Fab 22 South" performer. He was a two-time team captain, the 2008 team Offensive MVP and lettered four seasons in football and three seasons in track and field.

SEAN KINCAID (6-4, 265, offensive lineman, Ambridge H.S.) “is a versatile player with great agility who can play any position on the offensive line,” Coach Mihalik said. A two-year starter, Kincaid earned first-team all-conference and team Offensive MVP honors as a senior.

KEVIN KULKA (6-2, 230, defensive end, General McLane H.S.) is “a strong player who plays with a mean streak,” Coach Mihalik said. “He has the ability to line up in several positions.” Kulka earned a pair of all-state honors as well as first-team all-region and All-District 10 status.

KIRK NYPAVER (6-2, 265, offensive lineman, Pittsburgh Bishop Canevin H.S.) is an aggressive, hard-nosed, blue-collar throwback type of offensive lineman,” Coach Mihalik said. A 2009 team captain and member of the National Honor Society, Nypaver earned second-team all-conference and Pittsburgh Almanac All-Star honors as a senior.

LEE PROVENCHER (6-2, 275, offensive lineman, General McLane H.S.) is “a solid football player who comes from a winning and tradition rich program,” Coach Mihalik said. Provencher, a three-year starter, earned a second-team all-region honor as a senior.

AARON SERRANO (6-1, 210, linebacker, Lorain [Ohio] Southview H.S.) “is an emotional player who plays sideline to sideline,” Coach Mihalik said. “He is a playmaker in both the run and pass game.” The 2009 Lake Erie League Defensive Player of the Year, Serrano recorded 126 total tackles in his senior season. He also earned first-team all-league and All-Lorain County and second-team all-district honors last fall and was a team captain in his third season as a letterwinner.

BILL WHITAKER (6-5, 325, offensive lineman, Mount Lebanon HS) "definitely enhances our size on the offensive line," Coach Mihalik said. "He has a powerful big body and moves very well.” Whitaker earned Pittsburgh Almanac, first-team all-conference and team Offensive Player of the Year honors last fall.

E'VANDER WRIGHT (5-10, 195, running back, McKeesport H.S.) “adds a breakaway threat, with a physical presence to the running game,” Coach Mihalik said. Wright scored nine touchdowns and averaged 13.9 yards per carry en route to earning first-team all-conference honors.
