Boxscore

CLARION, Pa.
-- Denell Stephens, Maron Brown and Kyle Camper each recorded double-doubles to lead the The Rock men's basketball team to a 95-90 overtime win at Clarion on Saturday. Camper's 12 assists establish a new single-season school record and Slippery Rock moved into a tie for second-place in the conference standings.

The win, coupled with a loss by Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday, moves The Rock into a tie for second place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division as both Indiana (Pa.) and The Rock boast 9-3 division records. The second position in the division is a highly coveted one, as it will come with a home game in the conference playoffs. Indiana will travel to Slippery Rock for the final game of the regular season next Saturday, a game that could have significant playoff seeding implications.

Clarion opened up an 11-point lead, 25-14, midway through the first half before Slippery Rock clawed back to within three points at 33-30 with 3:19 left in the half. The Golden Eagles responded with a 12-3 run to close the half leading 45-32.

The Rock opened the second half with a 16-7 run to pull back to within four points at 52-48 with just under 15 minutes left on the clock. Clarion pushed its lead back up to eight points and held it steady between six and eight points until just under six minutes to play when Brown connected on a layup to bring the score to 72-68.

Clarion led 78-74 with 2:30 to play before Stephens hit two free throws, the second coming with 47 seconds left, to tie the game at 78-78. Neither team could convert over the final 40 seconds of regulation, setting up the overtime session.

The lead changed hands back and forth and remained tied, 84-84, with 1:32 to play before Maurice Douglas hit a three-pointer to put The Rock up 87-84 with 1:16 to play. SRU connected on eight free throws in the final minute to seal the 95-90 win.

Stephens finished with a game high 34 points to go with his 13 rebounds. Brown added 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds and Camper finished with 15 points and 12 assists.

Camper's 12 assists brought his season tally to 271, passing the previous SRU record of 259 set by Brent Schrempf during the 1993-94 season. He needs just two more assists to set the all-time PSAC record.

Clarion was led by Aaron Trail and Ron Hollis, who each finished with 18 points. Mike Sherry added 16 points and Josh Yanke added 13.

The Rock finished the game shooting 49.3 percent from the field (33-67) to Clarion's 40.9 percent (27-66) and held a 49-37 rebounding advantage.

The win improves SRU to 18-7 overall and 9-3 in the PSAC-West, while Clarion falls to 11-14 overall and 2-10 in conference play.

Slippery Rock will travel to California (Pa.) on Wednesday night for an 8 p.m. tip and will close the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Morrow Field House with a 3 p.m. contest against Indiana (Pa.). That game will be part of Community Appreciation Day at SRU, with all fans admitted to both the women's (1 p.m.) and men's games for free.
