Rock records fifth win, 80-67 over Queens (N.Y.)

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team recorded its fifth win in as many games this winter when it chalked up an 80-67 victory Saturday afternoon over Queens College (N.Y.) in second-day action of the 45th Annual Pocono Classic hosted by East Stroudsburg University.

The win was The Rock's 13th straight in regular-season action and 26th victory in two seasons under the direction of head coach Kevin Reynolds.

Queens lost for the second straight day and saw its season record drop to 2-3

SRU beat District of Columbia by a 78-65 margin, while Queens dropped a 93-71 decision to East Stroudsburg in opening-day action of the Classic.

Junior guard Jabril Bailey recorded a “double-double” for the second straight day as he finished Saturday's game with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior guard Michael Evans Jr. added 19 points and a team-best five assists, senior guard Cecil Brown contributed 10 points and junior forward Maron Brown chipped in eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Rock finished the game with a 47% (26 of 65) efficiency on its field goal attempts, hit 36% (8 of 22) from beyond the 3-point arc and made 58% (14 of 24) of its free throws.

Queens shot 32% (23 of 71) from the field, 23% (5 of 22) from long range and 67% (16 of 24) from the foul line.

Behind the lead of Maron Brown and Bailey, The Rock enjoyed a 50-40 rebounding advantage. But the Green and White were on the wrong end of a 22-16 turnover comparison.

The Rock put together a 15-5 run to turn a 6-6 deadlock into a 21-11 SRU lead with 12:35 left in the first half and never looked back.

Queens trimmed the lead to seven points, 23-16, with 10:30 left in the opening half, only to see The Rock respond with a 15-3 run in the next three and a half minutes to take a 19-point, 38-19, lead with seven minutes remaining before the intermission.

The Rock took a 13-point lead into the locker room at halftime after shooting 50% (18 of 36) from the field, 40% (6 of 15) from 3-point range and 50% (4 of 8) from the foul line.

Queens made only 31% (13 of 42) of its field goal attempts, shot 40% (4 of 10) from beyond the arc and 60% (3 of 5) from the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes of action.

Maron Brown grabbed seven rebounds and Bailey five to lead The Rock to a 27-24 rebounding advantage. SRU had seven first-half turnovers, which led to only four Queens points, compared to eight miscues for Queens that The Rock converted into 14 points..

The Rock also got 17 points from its substitutes, led by eight points by Cecil Brown and seven points by sophomore guard Tommy Kelly. Queens' backups scored eight points.

Evans led The Rock's first-half scoring attack with 11 points and Bailey added eight points.

Queens closed The Rock lead to 10 points, 61-51, with 10:45 left to play before The Rock responded with an 11-4 run in the next four minutes to push the advantage to 17 points, 72-55.

The Rock lead was never less than 12 points the rest of the game.

SRU goes in search of its sixth win Friday, when it takes on Ohio State Newark in opening-day action of the Joe Manchin Classic hosted by Salem International University in West Virginia.

The Rock meets the Classic's host team next Saturday, then is idle until Dec. 21, when it will travel to Shepherd (W. Va.) University.

The next Rock home game is Dec. 30 against Ohio University Eastern (3 p.m. tipoff).
