SALEM, W. Va. -- Junior forward
Maron Brown recorded a "double-double" of 18 points and 17 rebounds Friday night to lead the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team to its sixth win in as many games this winter, an 86-69 triumph over Ohio State Newark in first-night action of the Joe Manchin Classic hosted by Salem International University.
Brown was one of three Rock players who finished with double-digit scoring totals. Senior forward
Jade Burka and senior guard
Andre Tarver each added 12 points to the winning attack.
Sophomore guard
Tommy Kelly had nine rebounds, senior forward
Gary Satterwhite eight rebounds, junior guard
Jabril Bailey grabbed seven rebounds and Burka snared six rebounds to lead The Rock to an unbelievable
80-40 advantage on the boards.
Final statistics also showed The Rock (97) and Ohio State Newark (77) combining to take
174 shots from the field in the 40-minute contest. Needless to say, those numbers are going to have to be verified.
The Rock returns to action at 7 p.m. Saturday, when it takes on the host team in the final game of the Classic, which is being played at the historic Underwood Armory.
Clarion (4-2), a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division rival of SRU, handed Salem International its seventh loss in as many games with an 83-57 decision in the second game of Friday's opening-night doubleheader.
