Evans Jr., Douglas deliver 1-2 knockout punch for Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Sophomore guard Michael Evans Jr. and junior guard Maurice Douglas delivered a 1-2 knockout punch Sunday afternoon to lead The Rock to a 76-63 win over visiting West Chester in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" action in Morrow Field House.

Evans pumped in a game-high 26 points and Douglas added 25 points as the Green and White snapped a three-game losing skid. The duo also shared teaqm-high honors with seven rebounds each and Douglas also had five assists.

Senior forward Denell Stephens chipped in 17 points and five rebounds for SRU, while senior point guard Kyle Camper, the conference leader in assists at 12 per game, had a "average" game Sunday with 13 handouts.

The win improved the Green and White's season record to 9-4, while the loss gave West Chester the same 9-4 mark.

The win total is the highest recorded by a Rock squad since the 1999-2000 season won 17 en route to an appearance in the PSAC championship game.

SRU goes in search of win #10 Wednesday when it travels to Mercyhurst College in Erie for a 7:30 p.m. game that will open the PSAC-Western Division schedule. The Rock hosts division rival Edinboro in a 3 p.m. game next Saturday.

Evans (pictured above) scored 16 of his points in the first half, when he nailed four 3-point shots (in eight attempts) and made six of 12 field goal attempts. He finished the game with a 9-of-17 effort from the field, a 7-of-13 efficiency from beyond the arc and was one of four from the foul line.

Douglas had 12 first-half points with three treys (in five attempts) and a 4-of-7 efficiency in total field goal tries. He finished the game with a 7-fof-16 efficiency from the field that included a 6-of-13 showing from 3-point range and was five of six from the foul line.

Camper handed out nine assists on The Rock's 14 first-half field goals and added four assists on 11 second-half field goals despite spending most of the stanza on the bench in foul trouble.

The Rock scored eight unanswered points in the span of two minutes early in the first half to take a 13-5 lead and held at least a four-point lead the rest of the way in the opening 20 minutes of action. The Green and white held a double-digit lead throughout the final 11 minutes of the stanza and held a 20-point (35-15) advantage with 4:15 left.

West Chester scored 10 of the final 12 points in the opening period to trim The Rock lead to 12 points, 37-25, at the intermission.

The Golden Rams trimmed The Rock lead to four points on two occasions in the first five minutes of the second half but could not overcome the advantage SRU earned via its strong first-half effort.

The Rock made 41.2% (14 of 34) of its first-half field goal attempts, including a 7-of-17 (41.2%) effienciency from beyond the arc, but was only one of seven (14.3%) from the foul lilne.

SRU finished the game with a 42.4% (25 of 59) showing from the field, 40.6% (13 of 32) from 3-point range and 54.2% (13 of 24) from the foul line.

West Chester shot 42.3% (11 of 26) from the field, was one of six (16.7%) from 3-point range and hit two of four free throws.

The Golden Rams finished the game with a 40% (22 of 55) showing from the field, a 20% (3 of 15) effort from beyond the arc and a 76.2% (16 of 21) efficiency from the foul line.

The Rock enjoyed a 22-16 advantage in rebounding in the first half of action and had only five turnovers compared to nine for the Golden Rams.

Final statistics showed both teams with 16 turnovers and The Rock with a 41-31 rebounding advantage.
