Rock drops 76-63 decision at Clarion

The loss deprived SRU (4-16, 2-4) of sole possession of fourth place in the division at the conclusion of the first round of the PSAC-West schedule

CLARION, Pa. -- The Rock had a chance to take over sole possession of fourth place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division race Wednesday night, but came up on the short end of a 76-63 decision against Clarion.

The win gave Clarion an 11-9 overall record and left them alone in fourth place with a 3-3 PSAC-W mark at the end of the first round of division play.

The Rock, meanwhile, fell to 4-16 overall and 2-4 in division play, one game behind Clarion

SRU will look to remain in the hunt for an elusive PSAC playoff berth when it hosts Lock Haven in a 3 p.m. division game Saturday in Morrow Field House.

The top four teams in the PSAC-West will earn a berth in the conference playoffs. SRU has not earned a PSAC playoff berth since the 1999-2000 season, when the Green and White played in the conference finals.

Junior point guard Darnell Johnson scored a team-high 16 points and handed out four assists Wednesday night for The Rock, while junior wing player Erroll Robinson added 15 points and freshman post player Cory Somerville chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds.

Clarion went on a 14-4 run during a seven-minute stretch late in the first half to take a 10-point (33-23) lead with three minutes left until halftime before SRU scored six of the final eight points in the first half to trim the margin to 35-29 at intermission.

The Rock never got closer than six points in the final 20 minutes and trailed by as many as 17 points (73-56 with 1:20 left).

Schedule change:The Rock's game vs. Penn State-New Kensington, originally scheduled for 7 p.m. on Feb. 15, has been moved back one day and will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. There will be no admission charged for the game.
