SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Sophomore forward
Maron Brown and junior guard
Michael Evans Jr. each scored 20 points Wednesday night to lead The Rock to a 79-69 win over visiting Shepherd (W. Va.) in non-conference action in Morrow Field House.
The win gave SRU its first 2-0 start to a season since 1993-94, when the Green and White won their first four games.
Shepherd lost for the third time in as many games this season.
Brown (pictured above) also grabbed a team-high 15 rebounds to record SRU's first "double-double" effort of the season, while Evans had four rebounds.
Senior forward
Denell Stephens added 18 points for The Rock before fouling out and senior point guard
Kyle Camper handed out 15 assists and recorded three steals.
The Rock held a 41-29 lead at halftime and were up by 14 points, 47-33, three minutes into the final half before Shepherd clawed its way back. The Rams eventually erased The Rock lead and, behind a 22-6 run, took a 55-53 lead with 10 minutes left to play.
A 15-6 Rock run in the next five minutes propelled the Green and White to a nine-point, 68-59, lead. Shepherd never got closer than six points in the final five minutes.
The Rock continues its five-game, season-opening homestand with a 3 p.m. game Saturday vs. Ohio State-Mansfield, then entertains Ashland (Ohio) Tuesday in a 7 p.m. game.
