SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Three Rock players scored 20 or more points Saturday afternoon to lead The Rock to an easy 103-63 season-opening win over visiting Ohio University-Eastern in non-conference action in Morrow Field House.
Saturday's game marked the head coaching debut of The Rock's
Kevin Reynolds, who served 10 seasons as an NCAA Division II assistant coach before assuming the Green and White reins.
Senior
Denell Stephens (pictured above) scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds for The Rock, while sophomore
Michael Evans Jr. added 23 points and senior
Jamar Scales chipped in 20. Senior point guard
Kyle Camper was credited with 14 assists.
Stephens is a transfer from Division II Angelo State (Texas), where he earned second-team All-Lone Star Conference honors last winter. Evans, the son of former NBA player Michael Evans Sr., transferred to SRU after being redshirted last winter at Division I Morehead State, where Reynolds served as an assistant coach.
Scales was one of only three returning players from last year's Rock squad that played in Saturday's game, while Camper is a former starter at Division I Iona College.
Camper and Scales are both SRU graduate students.
The Rock held a 60-24 advantage at halftime of Saturday's game and outscored the Panthers by a 43-39 margin in the final 20 minutes of action.
The Rock returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, when it will host Shepherd (W. Va.) in the second of five straight home games the Green and White will play to open the 2008-09 season.
Notes: Saturday's win was SRU's first opening-game triumph since the 2003-04 team beat Glenville State 93-90 ... SRU's point total Saturday was its highest in a season opener since the 1993-94 squad won a 115-68 decision against Hiram College of Ohio ... The point total was also the highest amassed by a Rock team since the 1994-95 team scored 110 in a NBA-like 120-110 loss to Bridgeport.
