LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- The Rock ended a nine-game losing skid Saturday afternoon with a 60-56 win at Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action.
The win gives SRU a 3-13 overall record and a 1-1 mark in PSAC-West competition.
Lock Haven, which lost its first 14 games this winter before beating Shippensburg last Wednesday, now stands at 1-15 overall, 1-1 in PSAC-West play.
Senior post player Ken Ottrix scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed six rebounds for SRU, while freshman post Corey Somerville added 10 points, junior point guard
Darnell Johnson eight points and three assists and freshman post
Jade Burka six points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Rock and Lock Haven battled on even terms throughout most of the first half before SRU rode a 13-0 run in the final three and half minutes to take a 10-point, 34-24, lead into intermission.
SRU never trailed in the second half, but also never put the win on ice until Johnson hit a pair of free throws with 0:04 left to play.
The Rock pulled away to a 19-point, 54-35, lead at the midway mark of the final 20 minutes, only to see Lock Haven respond with a 22-5 run that trimmed the deficit to only two points, 58-56, with just less than a minute left to play.
SRU shot 41.7% (23 of 55) from the field in the game, hit three of nine shots from 3-point range and buried 11 of 12 (91.7%) free throws.
Free throw shooting proved to be a big difference in the game as Lock Haven made only six of 13 (46.2%) charity tosses.
The hosts shot 37.5% (21 of 56) from the field and hit 36.4% (8 of 22) from beyond the arc.
The teams battled to a 30-30 stalemate in rebounding.
The Rock's next game will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, when it will travel to division rival Indiana U. of Pa.
SRU is then idle for one week before hosting division foe California U. of Pa. on Jan. 30 (8 p.m. tipoff in Morrow Field House).
