SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Rock worked an overtime shift for the second straight game Thursday night, but this time cashed the big check as it rang up a 103-95 extra-period win over non-conference rival Glenville State (3-4) in Morrow Field House.
The win came four nights after SRU (2-4) took defending Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion Millersville to double overtime before falling by an 81-77 score.
The Rock will have little time to relax, catch their breath and/or celebrate as they must travel to Seton Hill for a 4 p.m. non-conference game Saturday.
Jamar Scales led a list of five Rock players who had double-digit scoring nights Thursday as he scored 22 points, grabbed five rebounds and recorded four steals.
Jade Burka added a season-high 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for The Rock before fouling out, while Joseph Vines had 17 points,
Erroll Robinson 15 points and six rebounds and Ken Ottrix 14 points before fouling out.
Rock guard
Darnell Johnson was credited with 22 assists in the game, a total that will be double-checked by SRU officials before it becomes official.
If Johnson's assists total holds up, it would be a PSAC single-game record. The current record of 21 was set by Candice Pickens of California (Pa.) vs. SRU in the 1994-95 season.
The NCAA Division II national record for single-game assists is 25 and is shared by two players (Ali Baaqar of Morris Brown and Adrian Hutt of Metro State, both in 1991.
The Rock shot a red-hot 63.5% (40 of 63) from the floor Thursday night and nailed 20 of 28 free throws (71.4%) while hitting three of eight 3-point tries (37.5%).
Glenville State, which was led in scoring by Mykail Vibbert's game-high 35 points, shot 48.1% (37 of 77) from the floor, 50% (10-20) from the foul line and 37.9% (11-29) from 3-point range.
The Rock's point total Thursday is the highest recorded by a Green and White squad since 1990-91 and its first 100-plus-point effort since a 101-64 win at Davis & Elkins (W. Va.) in the eighth game of the 1999-2000 season.
That's a good omen for the Green and White: The 1999-2000 Rock squad played in the PSAC title game. That was also the last time SRU earned a PSAC playoff berth.
To say Thursday night's game was nip and tuck would be putting it mildly.
The lead changed hands three times and the score was tied once in the first half, the score was tied five times and the lead changed hands 10 times in the second half and the score was tied once and the lead changed hands once in overtime.
The Rock scored the first basket of the game, a 3-point shot by Robinson 30 seconds into action, and led throughout the opening 10 minutes of play.
Glenville State, after trailing by eight points (15-7) with 14:20 left in the first half, put together a 15-5 run to take a 23-20 lead six minutes later.
The Rock regained the lead at 24-23 with 7:30 left, before Glenville reassummed command en route to an eight-point, 44-36, advantage at intermission.
SRU opened the second half with a 13-4 run to regain the lead at 49-48 with 16:30 left in regulation time and, after four lead changes and three ties, had a seven-point (70-63) lead with nine minutes remaining.
Glenville State ran off 10 straight points, though, to take a 73-70 lead with six minutes left in regulation time and the nip-and-tuck battle was back on.
The visitors held a four-point, 78-74, advantage with three minutes left before SRU rode a five-point run to a 79-78 edge with 0:49 remaining.
A pair of free throws by Robinson with 0:07 left in regulation ultimately sent the contest into overtime.
SRU never trailed in overtime after Burka hit a jumper with 4:33 left in the five-minute extra stanza.
Glenville State tied the score at 83-83 on the ensuing possession before The Rock scored four unanswered points and 19 of the next 26 points to take a 12-point, 100-90, lead with 0:33 left in overtime. A 3-point shot by Glenville State just prior to the final buzzer pulled the final margin back to single digits.
