MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- The Rock (1-4) gave unbeaten (5-0) Millersville fits Sunday afternoon before falling by an 81-77 margin in double overtime.
It must be noted upfront that Millersville is the reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion and the preseason favorite to win this year's Eastern Division title. The Rock was picked to finish last in the seven-team PSAC-West.
The Rock led by 13 points (57-44) with seven minutes left in regulation Sunday and held a six-point (66-60) advantage with 90 seconds remaining before Millersville converted three straight SRU turnovers into six points and sent the game into the first overtime period.
SRU then held a three-point, 73-70, lead with 31.7 seconds in the first extra stanza, only to see the Marauders nail a trey with 16 ticks left to send the game into a second extended period.
The final Rock hurrah came on a jump shot by Ken Ottrix to open the second overtime period. Millersville responded with seven unanswered points before
Erroll Robinson accounted for the final Rock points with a pair of free throws with 13.3 seconds left to close the deficit to three points, 80-77.
Robinson led The Rock in scoring with 27 points in a substitute role, while Ottrix added 18 points and 11 rebounds,
Jamar Scales 15 points and nine rebounds and Joseph Vines 11 points and six rebounds.
Darnell Johnson handed out 10 assists and had six steals for SRU.
The Rock played the final eight minutes of the game with four of its five starters -- Ottrix the lone exception -- disqualified from the game due to five personal fouls.
Ironically, free throw shooting kept The Rock in the game. SRU, which had been hampered by a woeful foul-shot effort in its first four games this season, nailed 24 of 29 (82.8%) charity tosses Sunday. Millersville, meanwhile, shot a woeful 45.5% (20 of 44) from the charity stripe.
SRU shot 40% (24 of 60) from the field and 29.4% (5 of 17) from 3-point range, while Millersville hit 32.9% (26 of 79) of its action shots, including a 22% (9 of 41) effort from beyond the arc.
Millersville, which got a game-high 36 points from Reggie Bates, outrebounded SRU by a 53-50 margin.
The Rock returns to action Thursday, when it will host Glenville State (W. Va.) in a 7 p.m. non-conference game in Morrow Field House.
The Green and White then travel to Seton Hill for a 4 p.m. non-conference game Saturday.
