Dr. John Mathe

Dr. Mathe is an assistant professor in the Counseling and Development Department at Slippery Rock University and also works directly with Slippery Rock Athletics, its teams and individual student-athletes.

Mathe teaches undergraduate and graduate classes at SRU, focusing on counseling and mental health. A former athlete himself, playing ice hockey for 16 years, Mathe has a passion for working with student-athletes in many different counseling realms, including working with mental health issues and performance counseling for student-athletes.

Mathe also meets with teams to discuss any mental health concerns and work on team bonding. In addition, he meets with students individually to meet their needs and he runs a student-athlete support group each semester.

Student-athletes at Slippery Rock are encouraged to reach out to Mathe whenever they feel they may need support or counseling. In addition to hosting counseling sessions himself, Mathe is also available to be a liaison to the SRU Counseling Center and can help arrange counseling sessions and other support services for SRU student-athletes.

Mathe earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from Robert Morris University in 2013, received his master's degree in clinical mental health counseling from Slippery Rock in 2016 and earned his Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision from Duquesne in 2020.
