Becky Sciacca

Becky Sciacca became the fifth head coach in Slippery Rock softball history on April 16, 2011.

“We are also excited to have Becky Sciacca as our head coach,” Director of Athletics Paul Lueken said. “We expect a very smooth transition as we work towards a PSAC championship."

In her first year at the helm, Sciacca guided the 2012 Slippery Rock team to a 16-17 overall record.

Prior to being named head coach, Sciacca served as an assistant coach for Slippery Rock for five seasons (2007-11) under Vashion Johnson.

Sciacca's inaugural season with The Rock in 2007 was a record-breaking year as the team set single season records in wins (26) and games played (48). Her second season at Slippery Rock proved even more impressive, as The Rock topped the school record again with a 27-17 final record in 2008, qualifying for the program's first NCAA Regional Championship tournament.

Sciacca helped lead The Rock to its first PSAC playoff since 1984 in her third season with the program after SRU posted 21 wins in 2009. In 2010, Slippery Rock produced a record of 22-21, giving The Rock 20 or more wins in each of her first four seasons as an assistant.

With Sciacca’s help, The Rock continued its string of success in 2011 by posting another winning record (19-13) and narrowly missing the conference tournament.

In her time as an assistant with The Rock, Sciacca has coached 19 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honorees including 2011 PSAC-West Pitcher of the Year Shaylee Ianno.

Sciacca has translated her experience as a four-time All-PSAC-West pitcher at California (Pa.) into a mentor role for numerous Rock hurlers, including Courtney Conron in her first season. Under Sciacca’s tutelage, Conron established new SRU marks in career shutouts (10), saves (5), relief appearances (18), strikeouts (280) and single-season shutouts (8). In 2008 Lisa Getgen set SRU records with 13 wins and 141 innings pitched.

In 2011 Sciacca’s pitching staff had another strong season, combining for a 2.39 ERA and 171 strikeouts.

Sciacca's collegiate playing career was marked with numerous honors.

As a senior, she helped lead the Vulcans to a 26-17 overall record, a second-place finish in the PSAC-West and berths in both the PSAC and NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional tournaments. In the latter competition, she was named to all-tournament honors.

Sciacca starred at California as a pitcher and a batter. She earned first team All-PSAC-West honors all four seasons as a pitcher and outfielder/first baseman while also garnering NFCA All-Region honors three times and second team NFCA All-America accolades in 2004.

For her career Sciacca recorded 54 wins, 325 strikeouts and a 1.72 ERA on the mound. Offensively, Sciacca compiled 23 home runs, 131 RBI and a batting average of .371 for the Vulcans. Her name can still be found throughout California’s record book. Entering the 2011 season, she ranked third in wins, fourth in home runs, fifth in strikeouts and seventh in RBI.

Sciacca received her bachelor’s degree in business and her master’s degree in sports management from California.
