The 2011 season will be Joe Walton’s 25th season as offensive line coach at Slippery Rock University.
Since joining The SRU staff in 1987, Walton has tutored 14 players who have earned All-American honors. One of those offensive linemen included the 2010 Upshaw Award winner, and current Minnesota Viking, Brandon Fusco.
A native of Beaver Falls, Walton was an outstanding offensive lineman at the University of Pittsburgh under legendary head coach Johnny Majors before graduating in 1975.
Walton then taught and coached four years at Johnstown Vo-Tech and seven years at Slippery Rock High School. He led SRHS to a school-record 11-1 mark in 1984. Walton is the cousin of his namesake, the former offensive coordinator for the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers and current head coach at Robert Morris University.
Coach Walton received his master’s degree in Parks & Recreation from Slippery Rock in 1988. He and his wife, Brenda, live in Slippery Rock and are the parents of a daughter, Abbey.
