SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team emerges victorious in its last non-conference game of the season with a 1-0 win over Frostburg State University, via a 53
rd minute game-winner from
Sophia Palermo, Saturday at James Egli Field.
Slippery Rock improved to 3-1-0 overall with a 2-0-0 mark inside the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division with the win, while Frostburg State's record dropped to 2-1-0 overall.
With the result, SRU is now 10-0-2 in its last 12 games at James Egli Field with a +26 goal differential (32-6).
Palermo scored the lone goal in the matchup just eight minutes into the second half. The game-winning goal was the sixth of Palermo's career, moving her into a tie for 15
th in program history with Andrea Felix (2013-16).
Lilia Battalini paced The Rock with five shots, as well as three shots goal. Palermo (3), along with
Peyton Los (2),
Abby Paterline (2) and
Miley Kariotis (2) took multiple shots, while
Jilly Deivert also took one shot for SRU.
Leah Allman made seven saves in her first clean sheet of the season in the 36th victory of her career. The Rock goalkeeper made seven saves for the seventh in her career.
After a scoreless first half, highlighted by four saves from Allman, Palermo intercepted a pass on the left wing and dribbled past multiple Bobcat defenders before sending her shot off the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Slippery Rock was then able to see out the final 37 minutes as Allman made three more saves.
Frostburg State outshot Slippery Rock 20-15 overall, including 7-5 in shots on goal. SRU finished the game with seven saves compared to FSU's three and each team took six corner kicks.
Slippery Rock hits the road for a PSAC West matchup under the lights in Erie, Pennsylvania against Gannon University 6 p.m. Sept. 9 at McConnell Family Stadium. The Rock are looking for their first win in Erie since 2019, when they swept the season series over the Golden Knights.
