Rock loses at Pitt-Johnstown

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost on the road to Pitt-Johnstown in three sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-22) Saturday. Ava Haynes led SRU with 12 kills, nine digs and one block.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost on the road to Pitt-Johnstown in three sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-22) Saturday at the Sports Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division decision moves The Rock's record to 5-9 overall and 0-3 in league matches. The host Mountain Cats improved to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC West.

Ava Haynes led SRU Saturday, just missing out on a double-double following a 12-kill, nine-dig, one-block performance that also included a .214 attack percentage. Haynes has now provided The Rock with four multi-kill matches this season.

Marley Annis chipped in six kills on a .267 hitting percentage, while Gwen McCarthy added four kills off the bench to supplement The Rock's attack.

Setters Paityn Krause (15) and Emily Loeffler (10) accounted for 25 of Slippery Rock's 26 assists. Saturday's production pushed Krause over 1,000-kill plateau during her time at SRU. She is one of just 14 athletes in program history to have recorded 1,000 assists in a career.

Addison Jones served SRU's lone ace on the day and the trio of Loeffler, Victoria Nalbach and Hayden Deming all concluded the match with two blocks to round out Slippery Rock's top performers.

Pitt-Johnstown held advantages over Slippery Rock in kills (46-32), attack percentage (.240 / .143), aces (4-1) and digs (37-29). Kiara Harmon (11), Caroline Knight (10) and Ellie Zuro Cirino (10) all had 10 or more kills for UPJ.

While all three of the sets between The Rock and Mountain Cats were relatively close, SRU was unable to register its first lead until what was a back-and-forth third set following back-to-back 25-18 UPJ wins. The third set ultimately went to Pitt-Johnstown in a 25-22 match-clinching decision.

Slippery Rock returns home for back-to-back PSAC West matches at Morrow Field House Oct. 2 against Edinboro (6 p.m.) and Oct. 3 versus Gannon University (1 p.m.).
