SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter and rolled to a 4-0 win over Coker University in a non-conference game Friday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
The Rock improve to 2-0 on the season for the second year in a row, while Coker slips to 0-3.
 
Slippery Rock has now scored at least four goals in each of the first two games and has tallied 10 goals in two games, marking the most for the program through the opening two games of the season since 2018 when SRU scored 13 goals in its first two games.   
 
The Rock wasted little time in getting on the board Friday when Hilary Hoffman fired a shot off a penalty corner from Lucy Hutchinson that found the cage just 2:23 into the game. Hoffman would add a second goal in the opening quarter when she scored off a pass from Coral Piramo in the 12th minute. She nearly had a hat trick in the first half, but a third goal was waived off.
 
Hutchinson added her own goal in the second quarter when she scored off a pass from Paige Shannon in the 26th minute to send SRU to halftime leading 3-0.
 
The Rock put the game away with a late tally from Piramo, who fired in a rebounded shot in the 59th minute for the final goal of the game.
 
Slippery Rock was dominant in all phases Friday, outshooting the Cobras 18-1 and recording a 17-1 advantage in penalty corners.
 
Sam Black registered the shutout in goal for SRU.
 
Coker used two keepers with Zahira Ferreyra playing the first half and recording six saves and Kylie Campbell playing the second half and recording one save.
 
The Rock will have little time to enjoy the win and will return to the field less than 24 hours after the final whistle as No. 9 Lander visits Saturday. The game was moved up one hour due to possible storms in the afternoon and will now begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.
