LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock claimed wins in three out of four games last week. In a doubleheader April 24 at Kasnevich Field, The Rock swept California (Pa.) with 1-0 and 4-3 victories. SRU followed those games with a split April 25 at Kasnevich Field against Seton Hill University. In game one, Slippery Rock clawed to a 1-0 win, but fell 2-1 in game two to the Griffins.
BAKER NAMED PSAC WEST PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Freshman standoutÂ
Rachel Baker (14-4) was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
With the honor, Baker has now earned four PSAC West Pitcher of the week awards, the most in a single season by a Rock pitcher and the second most in program history.
Baker went 2-0 in her pair of starts last week for Slippery Rock. The freshman picked up two complete-game shutout victories over California and Seton Hill.
Against the Vulcans, Baker surrendered no runs on seven hits and one walk with nine strikeouts. In the victory against the Griffins, the rookie gave up no runs on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
The two outings increased Baker's complete game total to 14 games as well as her shutout ledger to three.
On the season, Baker has a 14-4 record in 19 starts in 116.1 innings pitched. The Canal Fulton, Ohio native has surrendered just 45 runs (34 earned) on 92 hits and 47 walks with 112 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting just .213 against Baker.
In the middle of an excellent rookie campaign, Baker ranks top 10 in in the PSAC multiple categories. The freshman sits fourth in ERA, fourth in opponents' batting average, sixth in wins, seventh in strikeouts and seventh in runs allowed.
PSAC WEST STANDINGS CHECK
This week marks the final week of the regular season for the PSAC West. With four divisional games remaining in the regular season, Slippery Rock enters the week in sole possession of second place in the PSAC West standings behind Indiana University (Pa.).
• In a shift in format from past years, the top five teams in the divisional standings from both the PSAC West and PSAC East at the end of the regular season qualify for this year's PSAC Tournament that will be held in Binghamton, New York.
Â
• At the top of the division, Slippery Rock trails IUP, who sports a 20-4 division record compared to SRU's 19-5 PSAC West mark. The two squads have both clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament.Â
Â
• Behind SRU and IUP, Seton Hill comfortably sits in third with a 16-8 PSAC West record, just three games behind The Rock and four behind the Crimson Hawks. The Griffins have also clinched a PSAC Tournament spot.
• California and Gannon hold the all-important fourth and fifth spots in the division standings with 12-12 and 10-14 division records, respectively.Â
Â
• Clarion and Pitt-Johnstown hold dueling 8-16 division records and are both within striking distance of the Golden Knights and the Vulcans as they are within two games of Gannon and four games of Cal.
• Edinboro (3-21) is the only team from the PSAC West to be eliminated from PSAC Tournament contention so far.
Â
• Slippery Rock has now qualified for the PSAC Tournament in four straight seasons.
