LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock swept the weekend with four wins in as many games versus Gannon University and at Edinboro. SRU took home 7-2 and 4-1 wins versus the Golden Knights April 10, while grabbing 11-2 (five innings) and 9-6 victories against the Fighting Scots April 11.
PSAC WEST STANDINGS CHECK
This weekend marks the fifth week of conference play of the year for the PSAC West. With 12 divisional games remaining in the regular season, Slippery Rock enters the weekend in sole possession of first place in the PSAC West standings.
• In a shift in format from past years, the top five teams in the divisional standings from both the PSAC West and PSAC East at the end of the regular season qualify for this year's PSAC Tournament that will be held in Binghamton, New York.
Â
• At the top of the division, only Slippery Rock and IUP have reached the 12-win mark, separating themselves from the field. The Rock currently sit 14-2 with the Crimson Hawks following closely behind with a 12-4 record.Â
Â
• Behind SRU and IUP, Seton Hill University comfortably sits in third with a 10-6 PSAC West record, while Gannon and California (Pa.) hold the all-important fourth and fifth spots in the division standings with 7-8 and 7-9 division records, respectively.Â
Â
• Pitt-Johnston (6-10), Clarion (4-11) and Edinboro (3-13) are all within striking distance of the Vulcans as each team is within at least four games.
Â
• Slippery Rock has qualified for the PSAC Tournament in the last three seasons.
CLINCHING SCENARIO
Slippery Rock has a chance to clinch a PSAC Tournament spot this weekend. If The Rock win all four games against Pitt-Johnstown and IUP they are guaranteed to clinch a spot, but SRU can also earn its way into the PSAC Tournament with three wins. With three victories, Slippery Rock would land on 17 PSAC West wins, matching Pitt-Johnstown's maximum amount in this scenario, which gives The Rock a spot as they would hold a 3-1 advantage in the head-to-head tiebreaker.
10-GAME WIN STREAK
Slippery Rock has been on a tear as it currenlty holds onto a 10-game win streak, tied for the second longest in porgram history, just behind the 13-game winning streak in 2011. With a sweep of the weekend, The Rock would push their win streak to 14 games, which would be the longest in program history.
CAVENAUGH EARNS ANOTHER PSAC WEST ATHLETE OF THE WEEK AWARD
Maddie Cavenaugh was named a PSAC West Co-Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Cavenaugh shared this week's PSAC West Athlete of the Week award with Edinboro's Cassidy Weller.
With the honor, Cavenaugh has now earned five PSAC West Athlete of the Week awards, the most in a single season by a Rock athlete, as well as being tied for the second most in program history all-time.Â
Cavenaugh led Slippery Rock to a 4-0 week with sweeps versus Gannon University and at Edinboro after hitting .750 (9-for-12) with seven runs, four home runs, eight RBIs, four stolen bases and three walks.
The freshman hit home runs in three of her four games this week, that included one go-ahead home run in the seventh inning against Edinboro and two leadoff home runs in the first inning against the Golden Knights and the Fighting Scots.Â
The Bridgeville, Pennsylvania native reached base at least twice in three out of four games last week. Also, Cavenaugh picked up at least two RBIs in all but one game last week, in which she still earned drove in one run.
