Cavenaugh earns PSAC West Co-Athlete of the Week honor

Slippery Rock softball freshman Maddie Cavenaugh was named a PSAC West Co-Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University softball freshman Maddie Cavenaugh was named a Pennsylvania State Athlete Conference Western Division Co-Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Cavenaugh shared this week's PSAC West Athlete of the Week award with Edinboro's Cassidy Weller.

With the honor, Cavenaugh has now earned five PSAC West Athlete of the Week awards, the most in a single season by a Rock athlete, as well as being tied for the second most in program history all-time. 

Cavenaugh led Slippery Rock to a 4-0 week with sweeps versus Gannon University and at Edinboro after hitting .750 (9-for-12) with seven runs, four home runs, eight RBIs, four stolen bases and three walks.

The freshman hit home runs in three of her four games this week, that included one go-ahead home run in the seventh inning against Edinboro and two leadoff home runs in the first inning against the Golden Knights and the Fighting Scots. 

The Bridgeville, Pennsylvania native reached base at least twice in three out of four games last week. Also, Cavenaugh picked up at least two RBIs in all but one game last week, in which she still earned drove in one run.

On the season, Cavenaugh is hitting .490 (51-for-104) with 37 runs, 40 RBIs, 11 home runs, eight doubles, three triples, 13 walks and 14 stolen bases. The freshman currently sits with a .538 on-base percentage and a .942 slugging percentage, good for a 1.480 OPS.

In the midst of an exceptional freshman season, Cavenaugh currently leads the PSAC in batting average, slugging percentage, runs and RBIs, while ranking second in on-base percentage, OPS and home runs.

With 20 games remaining in the regular season, Cavenaugh sits inside of the top 10 in numerous categories in Slippery Rock single-season records. The freshman is fifth in total bases (98), sixth in RBIs, seventh in runs, eighth in home runs and ninth in hits.

The Rock currently sit with a 20-10 record overall and a 14-2 mark inside the PSAC West. SRU holds a two-game advantage over Indiana University (Pa.) for first place in the division standings. SRU is currently on a 10-game win streak, the second longest in program history. 

Slippery Rock continues PSAC West play this week with two conference doubleheaders, both on the road. The Rock begin the week with a twibill 2 p.m. Friday at Pitt-Johnstown and they end the week with a crucial set 1 p.m. at IUP.
