Rock beats Fairmont State, 13-5

The Slippery Rock baseball team earned a 13-5 victory on the road against Fairmont State Tuesday afternoon in non-conference competition at Mylan Park.

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Slippery Rock University baseball team earned a 13-5 victory on the road against Fairmont State University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference competition at Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia.

The victory served as SRU's fifth win in its last six games and improved its record to 15-9 in 2026. Fairmont State's record dropped to 13-12 with the loss. Slippery Rock has now captured victories in 10 consecutive midweek games dating back to the end of 2024 season.

The Rock earned Tuesday's win thanks to an offensive output that included 14 hits – SRU's 11th double-digit hit total in a game this season and third in the last four games.

Slippery Rock's sizable amount of hits was distributed amongst eight athletes with The Rock's middle infielders helping to lead the way.

Second baseman Clay Wiesen finished 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBIs while shortstop Jake Robinson garnered a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included two runs scored, one walk, a stolen base and one double.

Leadoff hitter Gage Gillott collected a season-high four RBIs while going 2-for-6. Luke Anderton was SRU's fourth batter to register a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs in addition to stealing one base.

Michael Kitko slugged his third home run of the year, while scoring twice and tallying two RBIs and drawing one walk.

Stone Powell (1-for-5, 1 run, 1 RBI), Brandon Butler (1-for-1, 1 RBI) and Max Bernadowski (1-for-3, 2 runs, 2 walks, 1 stolen base) rounded out SRU's hit leaders. In what was his third career start, freshman reserve catcher Landon Hamer scored two runs while walking three times.

On the mound, Slippery Rock used four pitchers to get through the nine-inning midweek contest. Kyle Warnsman (3-0) made his second start of the season and pitched three innings, giving up three runs – two earned – on five hits and two walks.

Tyler Slone was the first relief pitcher out of The Rock's bullpen. The freshman pitched a season-high 2.2 innings, striking out four Falcons and allowing two runs on three hits and two walks.

Michael Cahill and Joey Vanzin were the final SRU pitchers to take the mound Tuesday. Cahill registered three strikeouts in 2.1 shutout innings before giving way to Vanzin, who logged the final three outs of the game on seven pitches.

Fairmont State jumped out to a 3-0 lead through three innings, but The Rock turned the game around via a four-run fourth inning.

All four runs in the game came with two outs as Anderton started the rally courtesy of a two-run single to centerfield that plated Wiesen and Darryn Callahan. The comeback continued in the next at-bat as Gillott connected on a two-run go-ahead double that brought in Hamer and Anderton to give SRU a 4-3 edge.

After trading runs with the host Falcons in the fifth inning, SRU gave itself some breathing room thanks to a three-run sixth frame that was highlighted by Kitko's two-run home run over the left field wall.

While Fairmont State scored one more run in the sixth, The Rock's lead was never in doubt as SRU closed out the victory by tacking on two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth which proved to be more than enough cushion for Cahill and Vanzin who recorded nine consecutive outs without allowing another FSU baserunner for the eight-run victory.

Luke Emory – the second of five Fairmont State pitchers used Tuesday – took the loss after being charged with two runs in 1.1 innings. Reilly Bubb paced Fairmont State's hitters by going 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs.

Slippery Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition for a four-game series against Indiana University (Pa.). The Rock travels to IUP for two games Friday before hosting the Crimson Hawks for a doubleheader Saturday at Critchfield Park. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m. on both days.
