SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team exploded for 29 total runs to kickoff Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play with a sweep versus Clarion, 11-3 in five innings and 18-9 in six innings Friday at Kasnevich Field.
After the pair of wins, Slippery Rock is back to .500 with an 8-8 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the PSAC West, while Clarion's record is now 6-10 and 0-2 in the PSAC West.
Slippery Rock was led by a plethora of players as The Rock had six players with three or more RBIs in the doubleheader, as well as four different players with home runs.
Maddie Cavenaugh had herself a day with a 6-for-8 showing with seven RBIs, five runs, three stolen bases, two home runs and one walk.
Alyssa Massucci went 3-for-7 with three runs, four RBIs and one home run.

GAME 1: Slippery Rock 11 – Clarion 3 (five innings)

Clarion kicked of the scoring in game one with two runs in the top of the first inning.
Slippery Rock responded in the bottom of the second when Smith drove in Deal with an RBI-triple after Deal reached with a single. The Rock then tied the game, 2-2, with and RBI-single from Brown.
SRU took its first lead of the game in the third inning as Mansfield hit a two RBI-triple to left center, scoring Cavenugh and
Shaylyn Shall after the duo drew a pair of walks, giving The Rock a 4-2 advantage. Deal added to the lead after a sac-fly scored Mansfield. With two outs in the inning, Smith knocked in Massucci with an RBI-double with Massucci reaching after being hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
After a run in the top of the fifth from the Golden Eagles, Slippery Rock scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to end game one with the run-rule, 11-3. SRU's five-run fifth inning was highlighted by Cavenaugh's walk-off three-run home run.
In the circle,
Rachel Baker picked up her fifth win of the year on her fourth complete-game of the season. Baker gave up three runs on three hits and three walks, while striking out four batters.
Rian Reed took the loss for Clarion, giving up five runs on four hits and three walks.
Offensively, Slippery Rock was paced by Cavenaugh, who finished game one going 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBIs one stolen base and one walk. Smith finished 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs and Pelles, who went 2-for-3 with one run had multiple hits in this game for SRU.
Mansfield, Massucci, Sheely, Deal and Brown all had one hit for The Rock in game one.
GAME 2: Slippery Rock 18 – Clarion 9 (six innings)

SRU continued where it left on in game one during the first inning in game two as Cavenaugh reached on a leadoff double, immediately followed by an RBI-single from Deal. The Rock added two more runs before the inning ended after Smith laced a two-RBI double down the left field line.
In the second and third innings, Clarion added four runs that was combated by seven runs from Slippery Rock. The Golden Eagles tied the game twice but never took the lead. SRU's six run third inning was highlighted by a three-run home run from Cavenaugh, her second of the doubleheader and fifth of the season, as well as Mansfield's 41
st career double, which solidified her as Slippery Rock's all-time doubles leader. Mansfield passed
Alexsa Hurd for first place on the list.
The Golden Eagles cut Slippery Rock's lead to as little as two in the fifth inning (11-9). The Rock then promptly scored seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings, leading to a Pelles' two-run walk-off home run, the first home run of her career. Earlier in the inning, Sheely added her second home run of the season, upping her RBI total to 19 in just 11 games played.

Paige Gresgott started and earned her second win of the season. Gresgott surrendered six runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out six batters in 3.1 innings.
Brooke Tatar and
Kayla Williams both pitched in relief of Gresgott. Tatar finished with three runs given up on three hits and one walk with one strikeout in 1.2 innings. Williams pitched one inning, giving no hits and no walks with one strikeout.
Emma Hipps was handed the loss in game two. Hipps ended the game with a line of 2.2 innings, nine runs, eight hits, three walks and one strikeout.
Slippery Rock is set for three doubleheaders next week as SRU hosts Edinboro 2 p.m. March 24 at Kasnevich Field. The Rock then hit road for the weekend 1 p.m. March 27 at Seton Hill University and 1 p.m. March 28 at California (Pa.).
