SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University baseball team opened its four-game series against Mansfield with a doubleheader sweep of the Mountaineers Saturday at Critchfield Park.
The Rock took game one, 22-4, followed by a 6-1 victory in game two. SRU's 22 runs in the opener is tied for the 14th most runs scored in a single-game in program history.
The sweep improved The Rock's record to 9-3 overall, while Mansfield dropped to 8-9.
Collectively, 13 Slippery Rock athletes combined for 28 hits and 14 walks over the two games.
On a cold day in which seemingly everyone swung a hot bat, it was the duo of
Darryn Callahan and
Stone Powell that led the SRU onslaught.
Callahan, who is in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak, went 5-for-6 over the doubleheader with two runs scored, one home run, six RBIs and two walks. Powell meanwhile was 5-for-8 in the two games with three runs, four doubles, three RBIs and one walk.
The Rock's middle infielder duo of shortstop
Jake Robinson and
Clay Wiesen helped SRU's efforts in every facet. In addition to playing outstanding defense, including playing the lead roles in turning three double plays, they combined to go 8-for-15 at the plate with 11 runs and five RBIs.
Robinson was 4-for-7 with six runs, two RBIs, two walks and a triple. Wiesen went 4-for-8 with five runs, one home run and three RBIs.
Treston Nemeth collected a pair of two-RBI games and while his 10-game hitting streak came to an end, leadoff hitter
Gage Gillott walked five times in the doubleheader, scored two runs and stole one base. Gillott has reached base in every game this season and currently holds a .598 on-base percentage.
On the mound, five Rock pitchers combined to give up runs in just three of 16 innings.
GAME 1: SRU 22 – MAN 4
W: Nate Malak (2-1)
L: Garrett Emerick (1-2)
Slippery Rock scored multiple runs in five of its six trips to the plate on the way to a 22-4 victory in the opener.
Mansfield scored three runs in the first inning, but surrendered 22 consecutive runs over the following five innings as Slippery Rock closed out the game with one of its top single-game run tallies in program history.
Slippery Rock came about its impressive run total by scoring four runs in the second inning, two in the third, four in the fourth, eight in the fifth and four in the sixth. The runs came by way of a season-high 18 hits and 10 walks.
Callahan went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, one home run and four RBIs. Wiesen (3-for-4, 4 runs, 3 RBIs, 2 doubles, 1 home run) and Powell (3-for-4, 2 runs, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs) each had three-hit games as well.
Continuing the multi-hit game trend were Robinson (2-for-3, 4 runs, 2 RBIs, 2 walks) and
Michael Kitko (2-for-5, 1 run, 2 RBIs, 1 stolen base).
Gillott drew four walks in the opener. Dating back to the 2009 season, only four other athletes inside the program have walked four times in a single-game.
Morgen Billotte also reached base three times with one hit and two walks all the while scoring three runs.
Nate Malak (2-1) settled in on the mound after the three-run first inning as he proceeded to pitch four shutout innings.
Joey Vanzin came on in the sixth and struck out two batters in his lone inning of work.
Owen Malak finished out the win with an inning pitched in the seventh in his first collegiate appearance with one unearned run surrendered.
Garrett Emerick (1-2) took the loss on the mound after giving up nine runs on nine hits and three walks over 3.1 innings.
GAME 2: SRU 6 – MAN 1
W: Parker Hogge (3-0)
L: Tyler Swineford (2-1)
S: Mark Wilbur (4)
After its offensive barrage in the opener, Slippery Rock closed out the sweep with a 6-1 victory in game two.
While The Rock's bats produced its six runs on 10 hits – five of which came by way of doubles – and four walks it was the pitching duo of
Parker Hogge and
Mark Wilbur that controlled the game.
In his first start of the season, Hogge (3-0) allowed just one run on two hits to go with four strikeouts over five innings pitched. Hogge did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. Wilbur came on for Hogge in the sixth and promptly struck out seven batters over four perfect innings as part of his fourth save of 2026.
Powell, Nemeth, Robinson and Callahan all enjoyed two-hit games in the nightcap with both of Powell's coming via doubles. Nemeth and Callahan each drove in two runs as well.
Luke Anderton reached base twice as well with two walks.
In what turned out to be all the runs it would need in the game, Callahan supplied SRU with a two-run double in the second inning.
Mansfield briefly cut into The Rock's lead with one run in the fifth, but Slippery Rock answered by scoring two more runs in the fifth on run-scoring hits by Powell and Nemeth as well as one-run frames in the sixth and seventh en route to the five-run decision.
Tyler Swineford (2-1) took the loss for Mansfield. He gave up five runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings.
Slippery Rock and Mansfield will finish off their weekend series with another doubleheader Sunday at Critchfield Park. Game one is set for noon.
