Rock splits pair at THE Spring Games

The Slippery Rock softball team split a pair at THE Spring Games with a 9-0 loss to Saint Anselm followed by a 2-1 win over Sioux Falls Sunday in Winter Haven, Florida.

WINTER HAVEN Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team split a pair at THE Spring Games with a 9-0 loss to Saint Anselm College followed by a 2-1 win over the University of Sioux Falls Sunday in Winter Haven, Florida.

Slippery Rock is now 3-1 after the set, while Saint Anselm is 1-0 and Sioux Falls is 2-8.

Slippery Rock was led by Alyssa Massucci, who had hits in both games for The Rock. The sophomore ended the day going 2-for-4 with two singles. Massucci was 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit single against the Hawks, while going 1-for-3 against the Cougars.

Following The Rock's 9-0 loss to Saint Anselm, Slippery Rock overcame a one run deficit to claim a nail-biting 2-1 victory over Sioux Falls.

The Cougars opened the scoring with a sac fly in the fourth inning. SRU promptly responded with a two-run fifth inning on an RBI-single from Shaylyn Shall, followed by a sac fly from Maddie Cavenaugh that brought in Madison Davis.

That would be all the offense The Rock needed as Rachel Baker was impressive again with a complete game that included just one run on five hits and three walks. The freshman struck out five batters en route to her second win in two starts.

Shall reached base three times in game two with a pair of walks to go along with her RBI single. Davis, who scored the winning run for SRU, finished the game going 1-for-2 with a walk.

Jessica Goldhardt was the only Rock player with multiple hits in game two as the junior went 2-for-4 with two singles and a stolen base.

Paige Parker and Grace Smith each collected one hit on matching 1-for-3 performances at the plate.

Ava Mejia took the loss after pitching three innings and giving up two runs on six hits. Mejia struck out two batters and walked one.

Slippery Rock has tomorrow off before another two-game set against Saint Anselm and Sioux Falls March 3. First pitch for SRU's tilt against the Hawks is at 10 a.m. followed by a 12:15 p.m. scheduled start against the Cougars.
