He also owns SRU records for made field goals (887), made free throws (638) and minutes played (3,885). Brown led SRU to two NCAA Tournament berths and was a four-time All-American and four-time All-PSAC honoree. He was drafted in the second round of the 1991 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves and to this day he is still the highest draft pick from a Division II program in the modern era of the NBA.
Â
Randy McKavish
•
Years at SRU: 1996-00
•
Accomplishments: While more known for his exploits in football where he was a dynamic two-time All-American dual-threat quarterback that led SRU to a 41-9 overall record with four PSAC West titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances, McKavish also played basketball for four years at SRU. PSAC WEST STANDINGS UPDATE
While far from a true must-win game, Slippery Rock enters the second leg of its PSAC West round-robin schedule Saturday in need of a victory to not only regain some of its lost momentum from earlier in the year, but to also stay in the top six of the Western Division standings.
Â
• The top six teams in the Western Division standings at the end of the regular season qualify for the PSAC Tournament. The first and second seeds in the standings earn first-round byes and a home game in the quarterfinal round while the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds are guaranteed home games in the first round.
Â
• The top three teams in the PSAC West standings have begun to separate itself as Gannon and California enter the weekend in a tie for first place with matching 12-1 league records while Indiana (Pa.) sits comfortably in third place at 10-3.
Â
• The remainder of the division's standings see five teams separated by no more than two games.
Â
• Seton Hill and Edinboro head into their respective weekend contests deadlocked in fourth place via 7-6 league marks.
Â
• If the season ended today Slippery Rock would occupy the sixth and final spot in the PSAC West standings thanks to its 6-7 conference record. However, The Rock have a clearance of just one game in front of Pitt-Johnstown and Clarion which are tied for seventh place by way of their 5-8 league records.
Â
• Slippery Rock has qualified for the PSAC Tournament in eight of the last nine years.

GANNON RECAP (Box Score)
Slippery Rock opened its three-game homestand with a 96-65 loss to seventh-ranked Gannon Jan. 31 at Morrow Field House.
Â
The Rock and Golden Knights traded baskets early one, but a 22-5 Gannon run in the middle stages of the first half gave GU an 18-point lead it would never come close to relinquishing. Gannon took a 20-point edge into the halftime break and grew its advantage out to a game-high 31 points with a foul shot in the contest's waning moments en route to the 96-35 win.Â
Â
Collectively The Rock shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from the field overall despite making just 2-of-17 3-point attempts (.118). SRU also converted 9-of-12 free throw attempts (.750).
BETTER THE 2ND TIME AROUND
Under head coach
Ian Grady, Slippery Rock has traditionally been better in its second trip through the PSAC West round-robin schedule than the initial leg.
Â
In the six previous completed seasons, SRU produced a better record in the second leg of its Western Division schedule four times while holding the same record once. Only one time under Grady has The Rock had a better opening half of their PSAC West schedule than the second – in 2018-19 SRU was 7-1 in the first round and 5-3 in the second.
Â
All told, Slippery Rock is 25-22 (.531) in the last six years in the first half of its PSAC West schedule compared to a 30-17 (.638) mark in the second half.

ROCK-MOUNTAIN CATS ROUND 1
Slippery Rock went on the road and earned a PSAC West victory as SRU defeated Pitt-Johnstown, 82-68, Jan. 13. After losing 10 straight games in Johnstown, Pennsylvania between 2015 and 2023, Slippery Rock has now won each of its last three trips to the Sports Center.
Â
Slippery Rock shot 56.5 percent (35-of-62) from the field overall and 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from 3-point range. The Rock took care of possession with just 12 turnovers, its third lowest total of the year. Slippery Rock also recorded a +7 (34-27) rebounding margin while scoring 19 points off 14 Pitt-Johnstown turnovers.
Â
While the Mountain Cats kept the game close through much of the day, Slippery Rock ultimately held the advantage for just under 38 minutes (37:40) with its lead growing to as many as 16 points in the second half.
Â
Thanks in no small part to six made 3-pointers,
Dame Givner recorded his second highest single-game scoring performance in a collegiate uniform with 28 points to lead SRU in the victory.
Â
Maceo Austin supplied The Rock with one of his standard great all-around performances of 16 points (7-of-10 shooting), three rebounds, two steals, two assists and one block.
Kerwin Prince delivered a double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and one steal. Five of Prince's rebounds came on the offensive glass.
Â
Isaac James shot a nearly perfect 6-of-8 from the field, finishing with 12 points, six rebounds and one steal.
RJ Sledge navigated the offense with five assists while coming away with two steals defensively.
Ike Herster chipped in nine points and two steals.

EFFORT ON THE GLASS SHOWS UP IN THE WIN COLUMN
Slippery Rock is 12-2 when holding a positive rebounding margin in 2025-26. SRU enters the UPJ game ranked fourth in the PSAC in total rebounding (39.6) and fifth in rebounding margin (+4.4). While UPJ ranks just seventh in the PSAC in total rebounding (37.9), the Mountain Cats' +4.6 rebounding margin sits above SRU in fourth place on the conference leaderboard. The Rock went +7 (34-27) on the glass against Pitt-Johnstown earlier in the game.
Â
DEFENSE CREATESÂ OFFENSE
Through 21 games, SRU is scoring 15.4 points off turnovers per game, which if maintained through the end of the season would represent the fourth highest such average inside the program over the last 12 years. Slippery Rock capitalized off 14 Pitt-Johnstown turnovers to the tune of 19 points in the first meeting of the season. UPJ ranks last in the PSAC in turnovers per game on the year at 16.9
Â
Slippery Rock has averaged 17.3 points off turnovers per game in its 13 wins this year, up from 12.3 in its eight losses.
MISSES TURNED INTO MOMENTUM
Slippery Rock has logged double-digit second chance point totals in 16 of 20 games this season. SRU is currently averaging 12.9 second chance points per game this season, well up from its 2024-25 average of 11.7.
Â
Four of The Rock's six worst second chance point totals in a game this season have resulted in losses. SRU is 10-4 when earning 11 or more second chance points in a game, but just 3-4 when closing a contest with 10 or less. SRU had 14 second chance points in its win at Pitt-Johnstown.
KEEP IT UNDER 80
Slippery Rock is a perfect 12-0 when holding opponents to under 80 points, but just 1-8 in high-scoring (80+) contests. Pitt-Johnstown has been held under 80 points in 11 games this season overall, including in seven of its last 10 contests.
Â
While Slippery Rock holds a 7-6 record and is relatively comfortable when being kept under 80 points, Pitt-Johnstown is just 2-9 in such contests.
Â
GET A LEAD, KEEP A LEAD
Slippery Rock is a perfect 13-0 in 2025-26 when holding a lead or being tied at halftime, but 0-8 when trailing after 20 minutes.
IT'S A MAKE OR MISS GAME
Slippery Rock is 9-3 this season when shooting above 45 percent from the field, but 4-5 when shooting below 45 percent. In 13 wins SRU has shot 48.7 percent compared to 43.4 in eight losses.
GIVNER 3RD in D2 ROOKIE SCORING
After scoring 17 points vs. Gannon,
Dame Givner remains ranked among the best freshmen scorers in all of Division II to begin the week.Â
Â
Givner, who has scored at least 20 points on six occasions this year including 28 at Pitt-Johnstown earlier in the season, enters the weekend at 343 points on the year overall on an average of 16.3 points per game.
Â
Givner is third in all of Division II in total points scored by a freshman while slotting ninth in rookie points per game. Far from a one-dimensional athlete, Givner also provides SRU with 3.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
Â
Also of note about the freshman scoring list, of the top-10 leaders in points per game Givner is one of just four athletes to be on a team with a record of at least five games above .500.

With a minimum of seven games to play in 2025-26, Givner is currently on pace to score 458 points which would position him second on The Rock's rookie scoring list behind only program legend Myron Brown (516 / 1987-88).
JAMES LOGS FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Isaac James secured a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double against Gannon. His season-high rebound total was reached behind a personal-best seven offensive rebounds. While his first at The Rock, it was his fifth double-double on the Division II level – he had four a year ago at Salem. Â
Â
Slippery Rock athletes have combined for seven double- doubles on the year distributed among
Kerwin Prince (3),
Elijah Hill (3) and James (1).
THE ROCK ROTATION
• Slippery Rock's backcourt is comprised of the true freshmen duo of
Dame Givner and
RJ Sledge.
Â
• One of the odds-on favorites to earn PSAC West Freshman of the Year honors, Givner is the only Rock player to have started all 21 games this year. As previously mentioned, he serves as one of the top freshmen scorers in all of Division II at 16.3 points per game on shooting percentages of .438 from the field, .371 from 3-point range and .791 at the foul line. He's also good for 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
Â
• Givner, who scored 17 points versus Gannon, has picked up at least one steal in all but three games this season.
Â
• Sledge joined Givner in the starting lineup 10 games ago and has since averaged 7.8 points, 3.9 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game as a starter – all of which are above his season averages.
Â
• Fresh off his first double-double of the year,
Isaac James heads into the Pitt-Johnstown game with per game averages of 10.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. A starter in 20 of his 21 games played, he shoots 48.9 percent from the floor and has pulled down at least seven rebounds in six of the last seven games.
Â
• The other half of The Rock's two-pronged forward attack,
Kerwin Prince has garnered per game averages of 10.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game all the while posting a near automatic .611 field goal percentage.
Â
• With 44 apiece, James and Prince have combined for 30.8 percent of SRU's offensive rebounds this year.
Â
• Despite being limited to six points against Gannon,
Brady Mayo has still averaged 12.3 points per game over the last four contests, up from his season average of 9.5. Mayo, who pockets 1.2 steals per game, has tallied eight multi-steal games over his 21 appearances this season including the Gannon game where he also matched his season-high with three assists.
Â
•
Sheick Samoura has finished in doubles figures in five of his last eight appearances, including an 11-point outing against Gannon. A 41.9 percent shooter on the year, Samoura has converted eight of his last 16 attempts from the floor. He also blocks 1.1 shots per game and grabs 4.2 rebounds a contest.
Â
•
Braylon Littlejohn continues to put together solid outings off the bench since his return from injury. Against Gannon, the redshirt freshman guard stacked up four points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists in a season-high matching 26 minutes played.
Â
•
Mack Staunch serves as The Rock's top reserve post presence. He's played in all 21 games on the way to averaging 1.6 points and 1.5 rebounds per game while shooting 60.9 percent from the field. Behind Staunch is
Enire Bowens, who has grabbed 1.3 rebounds a contest in a career-high 16 games played this year.
Â
• Rounding out The Rock's roster of athletes who have played in games this season are

HERSTER CLOSING IN ON SCORING MILESTONE
Ike Herster enters the weekend needing to score five points to become the 26th athlete in program history to score 1,000 points in a Rock uniform.
Â
While Herster is nearing SRU 1,000-point milestone, he's already scored 1,366 points in the totality of his college career between his time at SRU and Gannon.
Â
His 995 points in a Rock uniform also represent the sixth highest point total by a transfer to come to SRU in program history. Herster also ranks seventh in program history in career 3-pointers with 116 - seven away from passing Jared Armstrong (2018-20) for sixth place.

SINGLE-GAME FRESHMEN SCORING AT SRU
SRU's talented freshmen class have been scoring at a rate that's been virtually unheard of for rookies at The Rock over the last quarter century.
Â
This year's roster has accounted for eight of the 17 20-point games scored by a freshman at The Rock since the 2001-02 season (the furthest back game-by-game statistics are available)
Â
Dame Givner has reached the 20-point threshold six times, with
Elijah Hill and
RJ Sledge notching one each. The most points scored by a freshman at The Rock since 2001-02 was Givner's 39 at Lock Haven.
Â
Givner's 39 points vs. Lock Haven is the best single-game total by a freshman in DII this year and the ninth best by a rookie in the entire NCAA.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN CATS
• Since its Jan. 10 home loss to Slippery Rock, Pitt-Johnstown has dropped three of five games to move its record to 11-10 overall and 5-8 inside the PSAC West.
Â
• While Pitt-Johnstown ranks in the middle of the PSAC in scoring production (6th / 82.1 ppg), the Mountain Cats get their points by being the most efficient team in the nation. Entering the weekend, UPJ leads Division II in field goal percentage at 52.1 percent.
Â
• Bucking the trend of the current state of most basketball philosophies, the Mountain Cats work virtually exclusively inside the 3-point line. Pitt-Johnstown attempts just 15.4 3-pointers per game, the fifth fewest attempts in all of Division II. While they don't attempt many 3-pointers, the Mountain Cats are accurate on the ones they do try as evidenced by the PSAC's second highest 3-point percentage (.373).
Â
• Defensively, the Mountain Cats yield 78.1 points per game, which ranks 14th inside the PSAC. UPJ also ranks third in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.305) and fourth in rebounding margin (+4.6).
Â
• UPJ is led by Baden Forup, who recorded a 16-point, 12-rebound, seven-assist double-double against SRU earlier in the year. On the season, Forup provides Pitt-Johnstown with per game averages of 19.0 points, 11.6 rebounds and 1.2 steals while shooting 62.9 percent. He ranks second in the country in both rebounds and double-doubles.
Â
• Two other active UPJ athletes average double figures per game as well in Vinnie Cugini (12.8) and Adam Bilinsky (11.6). A third - Jay Rose who had 14 points vs. SRU and averaged 16.6 ppg - is no longer on the roster.
Â
• Bilinsky had 14 points against The Rock in the first meeting of the season while Cugini was limited to four points. Bilinsky also averages 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game.
Â
• The brother of former All-American John Paul Kromka, Will Kromka scored 15 points vs. SRU in Johnstown, Pennsylvania earlier in the year along with two blocks and two steals. He has gone for 8.8 ppg and 4.4 rpg in 20 games.
