INDIANA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team fell, 80-43, to No. 6 Indiana University (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition Saturday afternoon at the Kovalchick Complex.
With the loss, Slippery Rock dropped to 7-15 overall and 5-11 in the PSAC West, while IUP's record improved to 21-1 overall and 15-1 in PSAC West action.
The Rock's loss, combined with California's victory over Clarion, dropped SRU to two games behind the Vulcans for sixth place in the PSAC Tournament standings. The top six teams in the PSAC West standings at the end of the regular season qualify for the PSAC Tournament.
Alyssa Gillin led Slippery Rock in scoring with 13 points. Gillin also finished with three rebounds, one assist and two blocks.
Iyanna Wade (8) and
Karianna Woods (7) rounded out SRU's top three scorers. Woods added one rebound and one assist to her seven points.
Sophia Hook and
Mairan Haggerty each scored six points for The Rock. Hook and Haggerty also combined for seven rebounds and three assists. Â
Hannah Pugliese rounded out SRU's scorers with three points as well as two rebounds.
Kayley Joseph-Bernard finished the matchup with four rebounds, two assists and one block.
SRU kicked off the game with an 8-2 run from two 3-pointers from Hook and a bucket from Haggerty in the first 2:42 of the first quarter. The Crimson Hawks scored 16 of the next 19 points to finish the first frame with an 18-11 advantage.
IUP held The Rock to just eight made field goals over the final three quarters as the Crimson Hawks pulled away for the eventual 80-43 victory.
Slippery Rock ended the game shooting 24 percent (12-of-50) from the field overall, 24 percent (6-for-25) from the 3-point line and 65 percent (13-of-20) from the charity stripe.Â
IUP finished the game shooting 47.6 percent (30-of-63) from the floor overall, 38.1 percent (8-for-21) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (12-of-15) from the foul line.Â
Teresa Maggio and Molly Keane both scored 13 points for the Crimson Hawks. Marin Miller rounded out IUP's double-digit scorers with 12 points.
Slippery Rock stays on the road to match-up with a nationally ranked opponent for its second consecutive game 5:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at No. 5 Gannon University. Earlier this season, the Golden Knights downed The Rock, 72-51, at Morrow Field House.
