CLINTON, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's cross country team finished sixth at the CMU Invitational hosted by Carnegie Mellon University Saturday at the Youthtowne Fields XC Course.
 
The Rock compiled a team score of 188 points to take sixth in a field of 24 complete teams. Division I West Virginia won the event with 45 points, edging Carnegie Mellon in second place with 69 points and Ashland in third with 107 points. Walsh was fourth with 126 points and Point Park rounded out the top five with 157 points. SRU finished sixth with 188 points, topping Northwood in seventh (232 pts) after Northwood just edged SRU by three points two weeks ago to win at Lock Haven.
 
Carissa Flynn led SRU with a fifth place overall finish after covering the 5,000-meter course in 18:00. She finished nearly a full minute ahead of the next SRU finisher with Caroline Wilson coming home next in 36th place in 18:57.
 
Marabelle Thornberry was the third finisher in 19:04 and the scorers were capped by Kayla Hanna in 47th in 19:14 and Birtukan Hartman in 62nd in 19:30.
 
Kayla Flanigan was 64th in 19:32 and Sydney Heltzell was 65th in the same time to round out the top seven finishers. Adi Jackson finished just one second back in 66th in 19:33 and Lila Miller also broke 20 minutes in 86th place in 19:47.
 
Slippery Rock will take next week off before competing Oct. 24 at the LHU Go Fast River Run hosted by Lock Haven.
