CALIFORNIA RECAP
Slippery Rock lost a home PSAC West game to California (Pa.), 86-75, Jan. 24 at Morrow Field House.
Â
As a team, SRU shot 38.3 percent (31-of-81) from the field overall, including an 8-of-25 (.320) day from 3-point range. The Rock also converted 5-of-8 free throw attempts. Slippery Rock made just 11 turnovers in the loss, its second lowest total in 2025-26.
Â
Slippery Rock held a +6 (47-41) rebounding margin thanks in no small part to 20 offensive rebounds, the team's second highest such total this year. The Rock converted their sizable offensive rebound tally into 18 second chance points.
Â
Cal left Morrow Field House shooting 46.4 percent (26-for-56) overall despite making just two of its 14 3-point attempts (.143). The Vulcans made the most of their trips to the foul line, hitting on 32-of-41 free throws (.780).Â
Â
The Vulcans jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the game's opening seven minutes and while SRU was able to get to within two possessions on six separate occasions it could never complete its comeback bid in the eventual 11-point loss.
A PRINCE AMONG MEN
The highlight of the California game came from
Kerwin Prince, who turned in a great all-around performance of 16 points, 16 rebounds, four steals and three assists while shooting 8-of-13 from the field. The double-double was his third of the year, and second in the last four games.
Â
Prince's 16 rebounds against the Vulcans matched the most by a Rock athlete in a single-game over the last three seasons: Lashon Lindsey also had 16 rebounds against Gannon during the 2023-24 season.
Â
Over the last four contests, Prince has produced per game averages of 12.0 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 62.9 percent (22-of-35).
MEETING OF TOP FRESHMEN SCORERS
Wednesday's game will feature two of the top freshmen scorers in Division II in The Rock's
Dame Givner and Edinboro's Rowan Carmichael. Givner and Carmichael have both scored 311 points this year, tied for the fourth most among all rookies in Division II.
Â
A starter in all 19 games for The Rock this season, Givner heads to Edinboro averaging 16.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 43.5 percent from the field overall, 37.6 percent from 3-point range and 79.3 percent at the foul line.
Â
Carmichael has started 13 of his 18 games played for Edinboro. He's produced per game averages of 17.3 points, 2.2 assists, 1.9 rebounds and 1.1 steals. Carmichael leads D2 in made 3-pointers (71).Â
Â
ROCK SOLID DISTRIBUTING BY SLEDGE
Freshmen point guard
RJ Sledge closed the California game with five assists in addition to scoring 11 points and grabbing a season-high six rebounds.
Â
Since entering The Rock's starting lineup eight games ago, Sledge has averaged 4.3 assists per game – well above his season average of 3.1 apg. Just as important, he has committed more than two turnovers in a game in just two of his eight starts.
BENCH PRODUCTION FROM MAYO
Freshman guard
Brady Mayo enters the Edinboro game on the heels of back-to-back double-digit scoring performances off the bench for SRU. After scoring 13 points against Seton Hill, Mayo went for 12 points against California. He shot a combined 45 percent (9-for-20) from the floor over the two games.
Â
Mayo has appeared in all 19 games this year, splitting his time between the starting lineup (11) and as one of The Rock's first athletes off the bench (8). He's scored 11 or more points in five of his eight games as a reserve with a per game average of 9.6 in such contests – slightly above his scoring average as a starter (9.0 ppg).
Â
PERIMETER DEFENSE TO BE TESTED
To say Edinboro prefers to run its offense from the outside in is an understatement. The Fighting Scots rank 14th in the nation in 3-point attempts per game with nearly 30 shots (29.6) a night from long range. The high volume of attempts has translated into 10.1 made 3-pointers per game, which ranks 25th in Division II.
Â
Luckily for Slippery Rock, its perimeter defense has been nearly unmatched this season as SRU ranks sixth in Division II, and first in the PSAC, in 3-point percentage defense (.275).
Â
Most recently, The Rock limited California to a 2-of-14 showing from 3-point territory. Only four teams have shot above 32 percent from 3-point range against Slippery Rock this year.
