SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Courtesy of an 83rd minute winner from
Miley Kariotis, the Slippery Rock University women's soccer team defeated Clarion, 2-1, Wednesday and in the process maintained its perfect Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division record.
Slippery Rock improves to 3-2-0 overall on the season and 3-0-0 in the PSAC West. With the win, The Rock push their winning percentage over .500 for the first time this season. Clarion falls to 0-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the PSAC West.
Marissa Salisbury put home one goal, making it three straight games with at least one goal for the senior. Salisbury is the first Rock player to score goals in three consecutive games since Rachel Edge in 2021. The tally upped Salisbury's season goal total to four. Kariotis rounded out SRU's scoring with her first career goal.
Bailey McGee and
Abby Paterline picked up one assist each against the Golden Eagles. The duo are tied for the season team lead in the category with two apiece.
Making her first collegiate start,
Lilia Battalini had four shots, including a game-high three attempts on target. Salisbury and
Lindsey Price recorded multiple shots on goal as well with two each.
With the win, Slippery Rock head coach
Noreen Herlihy moved into a tie for 23
rd place in the all-time wins list for Division II. Herlihy is now tied with Ali Omar (Winona State).
Goalkeeper
Leah Allman's record improved to 3-2-0 on the season. Allman made four saves in The Rock's victory. The win marks the 24
th victory of Allman's career.
Slippery Rock opened the scoring in the 23
rd minute when McGee's pass found Salisbury behind the Golden Eagles' defense. After receiving the pass, Salisbury chipped the ball over Clarion goalkeeper Sage Sherk, giving Slippery Rock a 1-0 lead.
Clarion found the equalizer in the 36
th minute. Sofia Barba buried her own rebound after Allman made the initial save on the corner kick, tying up the game, 1-1.
Slippery Rock took a 13-4 advantage in shots in the break, as well as a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. SRU took three corner kicks compared to Clarion's one.
With the clock continuing to dwindle in the second half, a draw between the two foes looked imminent, but Kariotis had something to say about that. The freshman from Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania took a pass from Paterline and sent a high flying shot from outside the box into the goal. The shot found its way over the head of Sherk and into the top left corner, giving Slippery Rock a 2-1 lead which it held onto for the rest of the game.
The Rock ended the contest with a 22-10 advantage in shots and a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Also, Slippery Rock had an 8-1 tilt in corner kicks.
Slippery Rock will hit the road to face-off with Indiana University (Pa.) 1 p.m. Saturday in PSAC West competition.
