ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Thanks to a 58
th minute equalizer from
Patrick Tierney, the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team came out with a 1-1 draw at Roberts Wesleyan University Wednesday.
Slippery Rock improves to 2-1-1 on the year, while Roberts Wesleyan stays undefeated with a 3-0-2 record in 2025.
Tierney scored the lone goal for The Rock off an in-swinging corner kick from
Colton Swanson. The tally was Tierney's first career goal, while Swanson grabbed his first assist of the year.
Alvey Kaufman improved his record to 1-0-1 with three saves on the day, while surrendering one goal.
Swanson led The Rock with three shots and landed two on goal.
Cornelis Dedecker and
Kaden Reynolds had two shots apiece.
Colton Spence,
Gabin Lonjard,
Ryan Hanes,
Zsombor Retfalvi and Tienrey all had one shot in the game.
An early chance for Roberts Wesleyan was stopped by Kaufman, who made a save on the reigning East Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week Archie Murphy from the top of the box.
Just a few minute later, Dedecker had opportunity of his own at the top of the RWU box, but goalkeeper Eric Jewson came out and cut off the angle to make the save.
The Redhawks would take a 1-0 lead in the 33
rd minute via Sebastian Guerrero, his fourth goal of the season. Murphy picked up an assist on the goal, his second assist of the RWU campaign.
At halftime, Slippery Rock took an 8-4 edge in shots and 4-2 advantage in shots on goal into the break.
The 52
nd minute brought a crucial point in the game. Roberts Wesleyan was awarded a penalty kick for a foul committed at the edge of the box. Kaufman stood strong and dove to his right, saving Murphy's penalty kick and keeping The Rock within one.
Quickly after the penalty save from Kaufman, Slippery Rock found an equalizer off the head of Tierney. The junior defender tied the game 1-1 in the 58
th minute with a header off a corner kick from Swanson.
As time ticked on, Roberts Wesleyan thought it had a game-winner in the 84
th minute, but the Redhawks were ruled offsides.
In the 87
th minute, Murphy once again found himself at the top of the box with a chance to win the game, but his attempt was stopped by Kaufman.
Slippery Rock finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots and 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
Slippery Rock will return to James Egli Field 1 p.m. Saturday to take on Shippensburg University in a Pennsaulvania State Athletic Conference crossover match. Saturday will also be The Rock's annual Ring of Honor game. The Ring of Honor inductees, B. Stephen Carpenter II, Dom Francis and Zach Hall, will be recognized at halftime.
