GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost a close 3-2 non-conference game in overtime Saturday at Lander University.
The loss, SRU's first of 2025, moves The Rock's record to 2-1 on the year while host Lander improves to 3-0.
Lucy Hutchinson scored a goal for a third consecutive game while
Madison Shomo recorded her first goal of the year.
Hilary Hoffman picked up her second assist in 2025 with
Roz Mikulak tallying her first collegiate assist as well. Hoffman also accounted for four of Slippery Rock's 10 shots in the contest.
Slippery Rock used both of its rostered goalies Saturday with
Leah Riegling making five saves and stopping five shots in the first half before giving way to
Emily Newton, who compiled eight saves with two goals allowed over 32:40 of playing time as part of her first career appearance.
Following a scoreless opening quarter, Slippery Rock struck first on Shomo's goal that was set up by Mikulak only for Lander to even the score heading into halftime via a Nienke Meima goal.
SRU re-gained the advantage eight minutes into the third quarter as Hutchinson continued her breakout season by scoring her third goal of the year courtesy of Hoffman's assist.
Slippery Rock's lead held for the rest of the third quarter and the majority of the fourth, but with five minutes remaining in regulation Dusty-Rose Miller found the equalizer. The Rock did earn a pair of penalty corners and a blocked shot attempt off Hoffman's stick following the goal, but couldn't find the game-winner as the contest headed into overtime.
Two minutes into the overtime period, Lander was awarded a penalty stroke which Olivia Bond was able to sneak past Newton, giving the Bearcats a one-goal win.
For the game, Lander held advantages over The Rock in total shots (19-10), shots on goal (16-5) and penalty corners (14-11).
Slippery Rock will look to bounce-back from its defeat when it meets Converse University at noon on Sunday in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
