FROSTBURG, Md. - The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team lost a non-conference road game at Frostburg State University, 2-1, Wednesday.
Â
The result moves The Rock's record to 0-2-0 on the season overall while the host Bobcats improve to 1-1-0.
Â
Wednesday's game was highlighted by freshman
Abby Paterline, who registered two shots with one being her first collegiate goal.
Â
Fellow freshman
Eden Williams came off the bench to register a team-high three shots, one of which was on target.
Bailey McGee also fired off a pair of attempts with
Sydney Smith,
Marissa Salisbury and
Lindsey Price compiling one attempt apiece as well.
Â
Goalkeeper
Leah Allman played all 90 minutes Wednesday, making three saves with two goals surrendered.
Â
As a team, Frostburg State held a slight 11-10 edge over The Rock in total shots. Both teams placed five shots on goal while SRU bettered FSU in corner kicks (5-3).
Â
Slippery Rock produced four of the game's first five attempts with the best early scoring opportunities coming off the feet of McGee and Salisbury.
Â
McGee first made a great pass from midfield to a streaking Salisbury down the near side in the 13th minute that resulted Salisbury cutting towards the center of the field and launching a shot past an FSU defender from 15 yards out, but into the waiting arms of Bobcat goalkeeper Mia Graff.
Â
McGee's attempt came on a free kick from 22 yards out two minutes later, but ultimately sailed high.
Â
The first of Frostburg State's two goals came in the 19th minute when Mollie Rebuck snuck a cross goal attempt past Allman. Under a minute later, FSU took advantage of misplayed ball in The Rock's zone which was corralled by Cassidy Page and shot past a diving Allman to give Frostburg a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Slippery Rock cut into its deficit in the 27th minute when Paterline rebounded her own attempt and promptly chipped a shot into an empty net.
Â
However, SRU was unable to find the game-tying goal over the next 63 minutes as Frostburg State first fended off a pair of Rock attempts – including a close shot by Williams that sailed high with 48 seconds showing on the clock - to take its one-goal advantage into halftime followed by a second half in which FSU managed to clear a pair of SRU corners as well as three shots to finish out the close home win.
Â
Wednesday's game marked the final non-conference contest of the year for Slippery Rock. SRU now turns its attention to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition starting with its home-opener against Edinboro 1 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field.
