Rock rushes past Walsh, 4-1

The Slippery Rock men's soccer team improved to 2-0 in 2025 after a 4-1 victory against Walsh at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team improved to 2-0 in 2025 after a 4-1 victory against Walsh University at James Egli Field.

The Rock are now 5-1-4 in their last 10 non-conference games. The visiting Cavaliers fall to 1-2 following the loss.

A balanced scoring effort from The Rock saw five different players record at least a point, including two multi-point games from Aashi Pandher and Cornelis Dedecker.

Dedecker and Pandher each collected a goal and an assist. Zsombor Retfalvi and Kaden Reynolds found the back of the net for SRU, while Massimo Cuda and Jimmy Irani picked up one assist each. The tallies from Dedecker, Reynolds and Retfalvi were the first collegiate goals for each. Pandher's marker was the fourth career goal for the Brampton, Ontario native.

Alvey Kaufman recorded three saves and recorded his first shutout in his first collegiate appearance and start.

Slippery Rock came out of the gates firing as Reynolds forced a save from Nick Bertolini just 18 seconds into the game. Four minutes later Reynolds would put Bertolini to the test again, which the Cavalier keeper would answer. In the 19th minute, Irani dribbled past a defender and sent a pass to Retfalvi, who turned and fired past Bertolini to give SRU a 1-0 lead.

Slippery Rock kept up constant pressure throughout the first half but were unable to double its lead before the break. SRU held a 9-2 lead in shots and 5-1 edge in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

It would take The Rock just 13 minutes into the second half to extend their lead in the 58th minute, Pandher found Dedecker in the box and sent in a cross, the freshman then headed a pass to Reynolds, who was all alone behind the defense to tap the ball in.

After knocking on the door multiple times, Dedecker would make it 3-0 off a feed from Cuda, who sent a through ball that Dedecker took in stride before besting Bertolini in the 62nd minute.

Stefan Velickovic would bring Walsh back within two after getting in behind Slippery Rock's defense and finding a way past Kaufman to make it 3-1 in the 68th minute. Kostas Paxos recorded an assist on the goal.

In the 86th minute, Pandher was fouled inside the box and SRU was awarded a penalty. Pandher's initial penalty kick was denied by Bertolini, but Pandher was the first to the loose ball as he deposited his own rebound into the back of the net for the game's final goal.

Slippery Rock had seven different players take a shot, amassing a 23-10 advantage in total attempts and 12-4 edge in shots on goal. The 23 shots were the most for the program a single game in their last 16 matches.

Slippery Rock will next hit the road for the first time in 2025 as it visits the University of the District of Columbia 1 p.m. Saturday
