NCAA Regional Rankings Â
INDIANAPOLIS – The Slippery Rock University softball team was selected as one of the 10 Atlantic Region teams named in the first unveiling of the NCAA Regional Rankings that were announced Wednesday by the Division II Softball Committee.
Â
The first set of regional rankings are listed in alphabetical order to show the top 10 teams currently in consideration for the Atlantic Region's eight postseason berths. The first numerical order rankings will be published next week Wednesday, April 23.
Â
The NCAA Regional Rankings are the only rankings that matter when it comes to determining which teams from each region will quality for the National Championship Tournament.
Â
There are multiple factors taken into consideration to determine the playoff fields, including winning percentage against Division II opponents, Division II strength of schedule, winning percentage against Atlantic Region teams, the NCAA Rating Percentage Index, the strength of schedule within the Atlantic Region and the NCAA's Performance Indicator. The Selection Committee reviews all of this information when ranking teams.
Â
The Atlantic Region is comprised of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, the Mountain East Conference and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The champion of each of those three conference tournaments receives an automatic qualification spot into the NCAA Tournament with the other five spots going to at-larges determined by the regional rankings.
Â
Slippery Rock joined Indiana University (Pa.) in representing the PSAC West, while Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg University, Kutztown University, Shepherd University, Shippensburg University and West Chester University all got into the rankings from the PSAC East. The MEC's Fairmont State University and Glenville State University were also included in the selections.
Â
Slippery Rock's selection marks its first selection to the Atlantic Region rankings since the initial set of rankings in 2023. The Rock have not been included past the first week of rankings since being selected as high as sixth in the 2018 season. SRU's only NCAA Tournament appearance came in 2008.
Â
Current leaders of the PSAC West standings by 1.5 games, Slippery Rock will look to add to its postseason resume with an important road doubleheader at Seton Hill University 2 p.m. Thursday.
