Rock upsets No. 22 Limestone 10-9 in OT

Slippery Rock won its second road game at a nationally ranked opponent this week and stayed undefeated on the year with a thrilling 10-9 overtime win at No. 22 Limestone Saturday afternoon in South Carolina.

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team stayed undefeated and picked up a second straight road win over a nationally ranked opponent with a thrilling 10-9 overtime win at No. 22 Limestone University Saturday from Saints Field.

Three days after going on the road and knocking off No. 9 East Stroudsburg 12-6, The Rock improved to 4-0 on the year with a second straight ranked win. Limestone slips to 5-3 on the year after entering the game ranked 22nd in the IWLCA coaches poll and 20th in the USA Lacrosse Magazine rankings.

Neither team could separate themselves throughout a back-and-forth game that saw five ties and five lead changes with the lead never growing to more than two goals for either team.

Slippery Rock scored the first two goals to jump out to an early 2-0 lead, but Limestone responded with a 4-1 run to take a 4-3 lead into the halftime break. The Saints opened the second half with just under 30 seconds left on a woman-up situation and made it count to take a 5-3 lead early in the third.

The Rock stopped that 3-0 run and went on their own 4-0 run to retake the lead 7-5 with 6:59 to play in the third. SRU had a chance to go up 8-5, but a shot hit the post and sprung the Saints back the other way. Limestone tallied the next two goals to tie the game at 7-7 entering the fourth quarter.

Slippery Rock edged ahead 8-7 with 9:13 to play when Abby Fink scored a woman-down goal off an assist from Ava Dossier. Limestone answered with back-to-back goals and scored a woman-up goal with 5:22 to play to take a 9-8 lead.

Limestone had two chances to extend the lead to 10-8, but turned the ball over twice to give SRU a chance at the equalizer. Reagan Richeson took advantage of a shooting space call and buried a free position shot with 2:59 to play to tie it at 9-9.

The Saints won the next draw control, but turned the ball over with Amelia Nitsche intercepting a pass and springing The Rock forward for a chance at a game-winner. After a timeout, Fink fired a shot that missed the mark with 35 seconds to play, sending the game to overtime tied at 9-9.

Slippery Rock wasted little time in the extra session with Leora Owings winning the opening draw control to set up the winning possession. Owings found Krysta Frankowski on the goal line and Frankowski buried the feed into the lower portion of the net 1:30 into the extra session to secure the win.

Limestone finished the game with advantages of 23-21 in total shots, 12-10 in draw controls and 19-16 in ground balls. The Rock were nearly perfect on the clear going 17-of-18 on clear attempts and caused 12 turnovers to limit Limestone to 14-of-20 on the clear.

Frankowski paced the attack with three goals for her first hat trick of the season, while Dossier led the team in total points with four assists. Richeson scored two goals and handed out one assist to finish the week with 10 points in two games. Eryn Little chipped in two goals and Owings added two assists to round out the multi-point scorers.

Fink, Sydney Ulmer and Grace Rotter all scored one goal and Ella Koslowski chipped in one assist to round out the point scorers. Paige Jenkins led the defense with two caused turnovers and a team-high five draw controls. Nicole Masi and Owings each added two caused turnovers and Lily Ventresca improved to 3-0 in goal after recording seven saves in 61:30 of work.

Limestone got a hat trick from Keira Martin and two goals each from Reese Hjertaas and Joscelin Martin to pace the attack and five saves from Emma McCoy in goal.

Saturday's game marked the opening of a three-game swing through South Carolina over spring break for Slippery Rock, which will visit Newberry College next Wednesday and Lander University next Saturday.
