No. 21 Rock stays unbeaten with 13-7 win at Newberry

No. 21 Slippery Rock improved to 5-0 for just the third time in program history with a 13-7 win on the road at Newberry Wednesday in South Carolina.

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The 21st ranked Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team improved to 5-0 and stayed unbeaten on its southern swing with a 13-7 win at Newberry College Wednesday.
 
The Rock scored the first four goals of the game and never looked back on the way to improving to 5-0 for just the third time in program history, joining the 2017 team that opened at 7-0 and the 1989 team that opened at 6-0. Newberry, under the direction of 2012 Slippery Rock alumnus and former men's basketball player Tommy Kelly, saw a three-game win streak halted to slip to 6-2 on the year.
 
Slippery Rock put together three separate 4-0 runs during the game and kept Newberry at bay for most of the second half with the Wolves never getting closer than four goals over the final 30 minutes. The Rock finished with advantages of 34-18 in shots, 18-6 in draw controls, 18-15 in ground balls and 10-9 in caused turnovers. SRU was 14-of-15 on clear attempts and limited Newberry to 16-of-20.
 
Reagan Richeson paced the attack with another strong offensive showing with five goals. Grace Rotter added two goals and one assist and Isabella Buono chipped in one goal and two assists, while Leora Owings scored two goals and Ava Dossier added one goal and one assist to give The Rock five players with multiple points. Owings also grabbed a game-high six draw controls.
 
Eryn Little and Cadyn Eismann each scored one goal and Maddie Blazey dished out one assist to cap the point scorers.
 
Paige Jenkins led the defense with three caused turnovers and five draw controls. Amelia Nitsche added three ground balls and Rotter and Victoria Ziemba each added two caused turnovers.
 
Lily Ventresca improved to 4-0 in goal with four saves and five goals allowed in 40:36 between the posts. She also grabbed four ground balls. Ava Drath played the final 19:24, allowing two goals and recording two saves.
 
Emma Jobs and Scythe Shephard paced Newberry with two goals each. Mackenzie Dorr took the loss in goal after allowing 13 goals and recording 10 saves in a complete game.
 
Slippery Rock will play its fourth straight road game and wrap up a three-game South Carolina trip Saturday with an 11 a.m. game at Lander University.
