THE ROCK AT THE SPRING GAMES
This year's trip to Florida marks Slippery Rock's 10
th time participating in The Spring Games under head coach
Stacey Rice. The Rock have accumulated a 13-11 record while in Florida over the past two seasons and are coming off a 5-7 showing at The Spring Games a year ago.
Â
Alexsa Hurd has been a force to be reckoned with at the plate having racked up a 25-for-72 showing at the plate for a .347 batting average while in Florida. In the circle, the two-way player has limited the damage with a 2.18 ERA thanks in part to 52 strikeouts in 57.2 innings pitched.
Â
Mackenzie Borkovich has seen a great deal of success in Florida, looking to improve upon a 3-0 record in the Sunshine State. Borkovich pitched the first shutout of her collegiate career to lift The Rock to a 4-3 victory over American International College a year ago at The Spring Games.
Â
Slippery Rock's active roster has combined for a .255 batting average while in Florida (136-for-533), while the pitching staff has registered a cumulative 3.34 ERA at The Spring Games. Two current players have logged a home run in Florida in their careers –
Emma Kennedy and
Julia Montie.
Â
SERIES HISTORY
In somewhat of a rarity for Slippery Rock when playing in The Spring Games, none of the 12 different opponents are new to SRU this season. The Rock have played all 12 teams on the schedule at least once in program history since 2016.
Â
The Rock have faced Minnesota State University, Ohio Dominican University and Purdue University Northwest just once in team history, looking to get their first win against each of these teams.
Â
On the flipside, SRU will be seeing Glenville State University, Bentley University and Wayne State University each for the ninth time in series history, the three most common opponents that The Rock will play.

LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock began the season with road splits at Shippensburg and Shepherd Feb. 23-24.
Â
The Rock picked up a thrilling 5-4 win in nine innings to begin the season at Shippensburg, fending off multiple walk-off opportunities for the Raiders. The sides drew even after seven innings, 2-2, with each team adding an additional run in the eighth to keep the game level at 3-3.
Â
Kennedy produced an RBI-single that brought Montie home for a one-run lead, and Kennedy was able to make it all the way to third on the play thanks to a throwing error from the outfield.
Alyssa Sheely generated an RBI-double to follow, plating Kennedy for what became the game-winning run. Hurd sealed the deal by striking out the final two batters.
Â
The Rock dropped a 9-1 decision in game two to the Raiders despite Montie hitting her second home run of the day. SRU fell to 1-2 on the season with a 6-1 game-one loss at Shepherd the next day but overcame two separate one-run deficits in game two to claim an 8-7 win and the series split.
Â
SRU utilized five hits and an error to go ahead 6-1 in the top of the third, getting three straight RBI-doubles from Hurd, Montie and
Aubrey Mansfield. Shepherd stormed back in the home half of the frame to take a 7-6 lead into the fourth, but another RBI-double from Montie knotted the game up once again.
Â
Montie came home on a single from Mansfield to secure the win. Hurd combined for six strikeouts in five innings in the circle, bookending a two-inning cameo from
Alexa Uphold, who earned the win. Hurd's relief appearance was rewarded with her third career save.
Â
LEADING THE ROCK
Kennedy has lit up the batter's box early on with a .455 batting average (5-for-11). The senior catcher from Monroeville, Pennsylvania has recorded at least two hits in two of the three games she has played in this season, picking up an RBI at Shippensburg.
Â
Montie joins Kennedy above .300 with a .308 batting average (4-for-13). The senior centerfielder leads Slippery Rock with five RBI, two home runs and two doubles. A native of Johnstown, Ohio, Montie is taking a .923 slugging percentage to Florida with her.
Â
Arielle Brown is batting .182 (2-for-11) but boasts a .357 on-base percentage. The senior shortstop led Slippery Rock a year ago with a .457 OBP and has thus far reached on one walk and two hit-by-pitches. Brown is also the only member of The Rock to have stolen two bases this season.
Â
Mansfield and Hurd have combined for three RBI and two doubles this season, both appearing in all four starting lineups The Rock have submitted.
Â
THE BULLPEN REPORT
Hurd (1-0, 1) led The Rock in the circle in their first weekend of play, striking out 14 batters in as many innings and amassing a team-leading 3.50 ERA. The veteran pitcher from Suffield, Ohio pitched the full nine-inning marathon against Shippensburg, fanning eight batters and allowing just two earned runs in the opening day win.
Â
Alexa Uphold (1-0) picked up the game two win at Shepherd by tossing one strikeout in the two innings in which Slippery Rock earned the final lead. In that time, she allowed no earned runs, entering Florida with an ERA of 0.00.
Â
Paige Gresgott (0-1) has piled up 10 strikeouts in 9.2 innings, seeing time against both Shippensburg and Shepherd. The Slippery Rock local crushed her career-high against the Rams with 10 strikeouts in six innings.
Â
Kayla Williams (0-1) made her Slippery Rock debut against Shepherd, while
Mackenzie Borkovich also saw an inning in the circle versus Shippensburg.
Â
ONE WEEK IN AND ONE AWARD ON THE SHELF
Hurd was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Pitcher of the Week to begin the season for the second year in a row Feb. 25. She was also named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week Feb. 27, 2024 after last season's opening weekend.
Â
With the honor, Hurd has now totaled five different PSAC weekly awards in her career, tying Brooke Dawson for most recorded weekly awards won by a Rock softball player. Dawson collective five PSAC weekly accolades between 2015-18.
Â
Hurd's most recent honor came after beginning the 2025 campaign with a 1-0 record and one save, combining for 14 strikeouts in 14.0 innings pitched at Shippensburg and Shepherd.
Â
Offensively, Hurd was part of Slippery Rock's four-run third inning at Shepherd, picking up an RBI-double and scoring on the very next at-bat courtesy of an RBI-double from Montie.
Â
MONTIE PICKING UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF
After leading Slippery Rock with 12 home runs and a .625 slugging percentage through 2024, Montie cracked two home runs out of the park in the first two games of the season. She wound up going 2-for-6 at Shippensburg with a home run in each game, finishing the day with a team-leading three RBI.
Â
Montie followed up that performance with two doubles at Shepherd the next day, only having recorded extra-base hits so far for The Rock while ranking second on the team with a .308 batting average.
Â
Montie's 0.5 home runs per game ranks fifth in all of Division II. She is one of just 10 players in Divisions I and II combined to average 0.5 home runs per game as of March 6.
Â
Her .923 slugging percentage stacks up fourth in the PSAC and 24
th in Division II, while her 0.5 doubles per game rank second in the conference and 19
th nationally.
Â
A+ RETURN FOR ALYSSA
After being sidelined with an injury for the last 16 games of the 2024 season, Sheely kicked off her comeback season with a 1-for-1 showing at Shippensburg. Coming in as a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth inning, the junior from New Middletown, Ohio drove in the game-winning run with an RBI-single down the right side that brought Kennedy home.
Â
Sheely also stole a base to advance to second, the fourth stolen base of her career.
Â
AN ELECTRIC START FOR EMMA
Playing in three games as Slippery Rock's catcher, Kennedy began the season with at least one hit in every game she appeared in and two hits in two of them. The senior from Monroeville, Pennsylvania leads Slippery Rock with a .455 batting average (5-for-11).
Â
NEVER GIVE UP
Both of Slippery Rock's wins have required some tenacity this season, with the season opener lasting nine innings at Shippensburg and SRU's second game at Shepherd featuring two different one-run deficits.
Â
Seven of the 12 games Slippery Rock played in Florida last year came down to just one run. The last two victories of the 2024 season were also by way of a nine-inning game at Shippensburg as well as a one-run win over West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Â
NEWCOMERS SEEING THE DIAMOND
Sophomore transfer
Jessica Goldhardt and true freshmen
Shaylyn Shall and
Kayla Williams played their first softball in a Slippery Rock uniform in the team's opening weekend.
Â
Goldhardt put two batters out in the outfield against Shepherd, also recording a stolen base at Shippensburg. Shall got the start as DP in game two at Shippensburg, going 1-for-2 at the plate. Williams faced four batters in game one at Shepherd to become SRU's first freshman to pitch in a game since eight Borkovich appearances in 2023.
Â
RICE ON THE CUSP OF HISTORY
Slippery Rock's game-two win at Shepherd marked
Stacey Rice's 184
th career win, tying her with Vashion Johnson (2004-11) as the winningest coach in Rock softball history. That said, Rice will take sole possession as the all-time wins leader with SRU's next victory.
Â
Rice's 184 wins rank second out of the nine PSAC coaches who have been a head coach for fewer than a dozen years.
Â
RECORD WATCH
• With 108 runs, Brown is just one shy of tying Jordan Zeunges (2008-11) for second in SRU history. Head coach Rice tops the record book with 143.
Â
• Montie's second home run at Shippensburg was the 20
th of her career, becoming just the eighth recorded SRU softball player to total at least 20 homers. Montie is tied for seventh with Katie Kaiser (2013-16) and just one away from Meghan McHenry's 21 (2006-08). Hurd ranks fourth with 27.
Â
• Montie also picked up her 25
th career double, putting her in a tie for 11
th all-time with Bobbi Kyler (2001-04). Just two more doules would move her from 11
th into a three-way tie for sixth. Hurd is tied with Kaiser for third with 29, just two behind Zeunges's 31 doubles.
Â
• Now with 139 career hits, Hurd could take sole possession of sixth all-time with five hits in Florida. She currently ranks 10
th and is one hit behind a three-way tie for seventh.
Â
• Hurd's save at Shepherd marked the third of her career, making her one of just seven SRU players all-time with at least three saves. Chloe Sharman (2019-23) leads that category with nine.
Â
• With 334 career strikeouts, Hurd is one K away from matching Shaylee Ianno's tally of 335 strikeouts, which ranks second all-time.
Kelsi Anderson finished her SRU career last year with 581 total strikeouts.
