Rock cruises to 6-1 win over Salem

In its first match against a fellow Division II team of the season, the Slippery Rock women’s tennis team earned a 6-1 victory against Salem Saturday evening at the Glen Creek Tennis Club.

SOUTH PARK, Pa. - In its first match against a fellow Division II team of the season, the Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory against Salem University Saturday evening at the Glen Creek Tennis Club in South Park, Pennsylvania.

Slippery Rock's victory, the second such in its last three matches, improves SRU's record to 2-3 overall while the Tigers fall to 0-2 following the loss.

The Rock earned the doubles point with three convincing decisions before taking all five completed singles bouts on the way to the overall team triumph.

SRU nearly had a three clean 6-0 sweeps in doubles play as Alissia Kivi and Nicole Kempton – the No. 22 doubles team in the country – blanked Erna Brdarevic and Galia Mezouar, 6-0, followed by a pair of 6-1 wins from The Rock's second and third flight pairings.

Amaia Balaguer Brau and Tina Slovak remained undefeated as a team, improving to 5-0 in second flight play, after Saturday's win against Hannah Davis and Dasha Korsakova while Georgie Lancaster and Dari Sakhanova grabbed their second win in the duo's last three outings by defeating Aishwarya Kailaje and Salome Molina from the third flight.

Kivi opened the singles portion of Saturday's match by stretching her personal winning streak to three matches with a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Mezouar from the second flight. She is now 9-4 on the year.

Seventh-ranked Balaguer Brau, the reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Athlete of the Week, snapped a two-match slide and improved her record to 11-6 in 2024-25 in the process by defeating Brdarevic 6-3, 6-2.

Sakhanova then followed the top of The Rock's lineup lead by besting Korsakova 6-1, 6-0 and earning the match-deciding point for SRU.

With the team victory already secured, Slippery Rock closed the contest with two more wins.

Lancaster defeated Salome Molina 6-3, 6-0 from the sixth flight and Kempton edged Aishwarya Kailaje 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in what was the closest match of the evening out of the third flight for her second consecutive win.

Salem avoided the shutout by gaining a point in the fourth flight as Diaz was leading Slovak, 4-3, before a retirement victory.

Slippery Rock returns to action when it heads south for its annual Florida trip March 9-14 where The Rock will compete against Winona State, Bryant, No. 13 Saint Leo and Florida Southern.
