Â
The highlight of the night for SRU belonged to
Jomo Goings, who became the 25th athlete in program history score 1,000 career points at The Rock following a 14-point, six-rebound, three-steal, one-block performance. Goings shot 5-for-10 from the field overall including one made 3-pointer to go with three made foul shots.
Â
Maceo Austin matched Goings for team-high scoring honors with 14 points in addition to compiling five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Â
Day Waters joined Austin and Goings in double figures with 13 points after making three 3-pointers. He also grabbed four rebounds and blocked two shots.
Â
Sheick Samoura added eight points, two steals and two blocks.
Michael Moore (two blocks, four rebounds),
Mack Staunch (seven rebounds),
Ike Herster (six points) and
O'Meech Wilson (six rebounds) rounded out SRU's top performers.
Â
Slippery Rock played the Golden Knights tight early on as GU led by just one point at 8-7 over the opening four minutes of regulation. Goings spearheaded SRU's attack with five of its first seven points.
However, SRU failed to score a point for the following four minutes, allowing the Golden Knights to open a 20-9 double-digit advantage they would never relinquish. Gannon went on to stretch its lead to 49-24 heading into halftime while cruising in the second half for the eventual 25-point victory.
Â
As a team, Slippery Rock shot 31.3 percent (21-of-67) overall, 22.2 percent (6-of-27) from 3-point range and 50 percent (11-of-22) at the foul line.
Â
While Gannon had modest shooting percentages in their own right of 41.3 percent (33-of-80) overall and 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from 3-point range, the Golden Knights parlayed 25 SRU turnovers into 22 points while holding a +17 rebounding margin (59-42). Tasman Goodrick recorded a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double to pace GU.
Â
Slippery Rock returns to competition 3 p.m. Saturday when it travels to Pitt-Johnstown. The Rock beat the Mountain Cats, 90-74, at Morrow Field House earlier in the season. A victory on Saturday would give SRU a second consecutive season-sweep of UPJ.
