Slippery Rock is one of the 10 teams from Super Region One listed in the first set of NCAA Regional Rankings that were announced Monday by the NCAA Division II Football Committee.

NCAA Regional Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – The Slippery Rock University football team was one of the 10 teams from Super Region One to be listed under consideration for postseason play when the NCAA Division II Football Committee announced its first set of Regional Rankings Monday.

The first set of rankings is an alphabetical list of the top 10 teams currently under consideration for the postseason. The Football Committee will announce the first ranked-order list next Monday, Nov. 3. The Regional Rankings will ultimately be used to determine which eight teams from each of the four NCAA Super Regions will qualify for the 2025 NCAA Division II Playoffs.

The playoff field will expand from 28 teams to 32 teams this year with each region getting eight teams into the postseason and the No. 1 seeds no longer getting a first round bye. Also new for this year is automatic qualifying bids for each conference champion, which means Super Region One will have four automatic qualifiers and four at-large selections.

Super Region One includes all teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, the Mountain East Conference, the Northeast 10 Conference and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Only the PSAC and the CIAA have a championship game, so the two automatic bids in those conferences will come from the winner of the title game, while the automatic qualifiers from the MEC and the NE10 will be the regular season champions.

The first set of rankings announced Monday include four teams from the PSAC, three teams from the CIAA, two teams from the MEC and one team from the NE10.

The NCAA Committee uses a plethora of data to determine the regional rankings, including the win-loss records, a weighted strength of schedule, wins against teams above .500, multiple performance indicator metrics that weigh the quality of wins and losses, head-to-head competition and more. The NCAA also generates a "performance indicator" score for each team that includes much of the data mentioned above.

Slippery Rock currently ranks eighth in the region in winning percentage plus strength of schedule, 10th in the region in performance indicator and tied for eighth in the region in overall wins.  The Rock are 1-1 against the other nine teams in the first set of rankings with a one-possession loss to California (Pa.) and a one-possession win over Indiana (Pa.).

The regional rankings are expected to feature multiple shakeups in the coming weeks as there are numerous matchups among the top 10 teams currently featured in the rankings, as well as a handful of teams with similar metrics knocking on the door.

One of those teams just outside the current top 10 is 6-2 Clarion, which will visit The Rock Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff in a must-win game for both teams in terms of their chances at qualifying for the postseason.

Slippery Rock is attempting to reach the NCAA Playoffs for the seventh straight season and currently owns the second longest active streak among all programs in the nation, trailing only the 10 straight trips for Ferris State. The Rock have not missed the postseason since 2017.
