LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University Athletics Department was announced Wednesday as the recipient of the 2023-24 Dixon Trophy from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, recognizing The Rock as the top Athletics Department in the conference this year.
Â
The Dixon Trophy is awarded annually to one of the 18 Athletics Departments in the PSAC that has the highest average finish in league-sponsored championships. Each team in each sport is awarded a point value between one and 18 based on its finish in league championships with 18 points going to each sport's champion. Those point totals are then averaged to provide a final score for each Athletics Department.
Â
Slippery Rock claims its second Dixon Trophy since the award's inception in 1995 and The Rock's first since the 2007-08 academic year after averaging a score of 12.76 points across its 17 teams. That tally narrowly edged two-time defending champion Gannon, which finished second with an average of 12.53 points as the only other campus in the PSAC to average more than 12 points. East Stroudsburg finished third with an average of 11.73 points, followed by West Chester in fourth with an average of 11.20 points and Kutztown rounding out the top five with an average of 11.03 points. Those five Athletics Departments were the only five in the PSAC to average more than 11.0 points in 2023-24.
Â
"I am so proud of our student-athletes, coaches, support staff and administration and thrilled for our University to be able to celebrate as Dixon Trophy winners this year," said Roberta Page, SRU director of athletics. "In addition to having an excellent year in competition, our student-athletes continue to be among the best in the PSAC in academics, as evidenced by our eight PSAC Champion Scholar winners this year. Winning in competition and in the classroom is exactly what we are striving to do and this honor is a fitting way to celebrate our success in both areas."
Â
Slippery Rock won two titles in 2023-24, earned six runner-up finishes and had nine of its 17 teams score at least 14 points in the Dixon Trophy standings.
Â
The women's cross country and indoor track & field teams both picked up titles and the women's outdoor track & field team was second. The women's cross country and track & field program averaged 17.67 points to help push SRU to the No. 1 spot in the final standings. The Rock also got a boost in the spring from a runner-up finish from women's tennis with 17 points and from women's lacrosse, which earned a program-record 14 points. Softball also grabbed 10 points in the spring and women's soccer earned 13 points in the fall to give SRU seven women's teams with at least 10 points. The Rock's 10 women's teams averaged 11.90 points, which ranked second among all schools behind only Gannon's women, which averaged 13.56 points.
Â
The Rock's seven men's teams led all schools in the PSAC with an average score of 14.00 points this year. The next-highest men's average was East Stroudsburg's 13.06, while the third-best men's score was Millersville at 12.50. SRU's men had six teams score at least 11 points and four teams record runner-up finishes in the league. Football and men's cross country both tallied 17 points, while men's indoor and outdoor track & field both scored 16 points as all four of those programs finished second in the league standings. Basketball grabbed 12.5 points, baseball scored 11 points and men's soccer earned 8.5 points as all seven SRU men's teams finished in the top half of the league.
Â
Slippery Rock has now finished in the top three in the final Dixon Trophy standings in each of the last three years. The Rock have never finished lower than eighth in the final standings since the award's inception in 1995 and have now finished in the top three seven times and in the top five 17 times in the 27 years the trophy has been handed out. SRU's only other Dixon Trophy win came in 2007-08 when the scoring rules did not require every team's score to count. This year's win marks the first Dixon Trophy for SRU with every team's score counting towards the total.
