GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned a 4-0 shutout victory against Millersville University in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament Friday at the Greensburg Racquet Club in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

Friday's victory improves The Rock's record to 15-7 overall and advances SRU to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where it will meet Indiana University (Pa.) – which earned a shutout of its own against Shaw University earlier in the day – 1 p.m. Friday at the Greensburg Racket Club. Millersville ends its season at 15-9.

Slippery Rock will now be making its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament's second round.

Friday's result served as SRU's second win against Millersville in the last week as The Rock also beat the Marauders May 2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals.

SRU registered its national tournament victory after earning the doubles point followed by wins in the second, fifth and sixth flights. In doubles play, The Rock's two veteran most pairings supplied the wins. Â

Out of the second flight, the senior duo of
Gabriela del Val del Toro and
Nuria Martin Lopez bested Chloe Abramowitz and Sido Rault, 6-4, while
Tina Slovak and
Dari Sakhanova downed Lauren Hayes and Sophie Lanius, 6-2, in third-flight competition.

Martin Lopez and del Val del Toro are now 13-3 on the year. Slovak and Sakhanova meanwhile have won six consecutive matches and are 12-7 in 2024.

del Val del Toro then ignited SRU's singles charge courtesy of a near shutout from the second flight where she defeated Hui Jen Soo 6-1, 6-0.

The remainder of the day belonged to the back end of Slippery Rock's lineup. Not only did Martin Lopez better Lanius with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout from the sixth flight, but Slovak produced a matching shutout in the fifth flight against Hayes to send SRU into the second round.

Slovak's win was her ninth in as many matches to push her record to 16-2 overall. Martin Lopez is now a flawless 5-0 when playing in the sixth flight and 12-6 overall. At 17-9, del Val del Toro is second on the team in total victories.

Saturday's match against IUP will be the third of the year between The Rock and Crimson Hawks. Indiana is 2-0 against SRU so far this season after earning a 5-2 win during the regular season and a tight 4-2 victory in the PSAC Tournament championship.

All told, Slippery Rock and Indiana (Pa.) have met in the NCAA Tournament seven times.
