Rock drops 11-10 OT heartbreaker at Seton Hill

Seton Hill scored with 22 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and then scored 1:39 into the extra period to hand Slippery Rock a heartbreaking 11-10 overtime loss on the road in a first place PSAC West battle Saturday.

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-10 overtime heartbreaker on the road at Seton Hill University Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game from Dick's Sporting Goods Field.

The Griffins improve to 10-4 overall and move into sole possession of first place in the PSAC West with an 8-1 division record. Slippery Rock had its six-game winning streak snapped and lost a one-goal overtime game for the second time this spring to drop to 10-3 overall and 6-2 in the PSAC West.

The Griffins led 6-5 at halftime and then outscored SRU 3-0 in the third quarter to take a 9-5 lead into the fourth quarter.

Slippery Rock stormed back into the game with four straight goals in the fourth quarter to tie it at 9-9 and then edged ahead when Sydney Ulmer scored off an assist from Lauren Searles with 4:34 to play to give The Rock a 10-9 lead.

SRU fought off four shot attempts from Seton Hill inside the final two minutes before the Griffins broke through with a game-tying goal from Amara Forsyth with just 22 seconds left in regulation. SHU won the final draw control and got a shot off at the buzzer, but missed high to send the game to overtime tied at 10-10.

The hosts won the crucial draw control to start the overtime period and then took advantage of a foul call inside the 8-meter area, setting up a free position goal from leading scorer Skylar Orlowski at the 1:39 mark of overtime. The Rock never got a chance to possess the ball in the extra period.

Seton Hill moves into the driver's seat in the division and controls its own destiny now in the race for the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. Slippery Rock now sits third in the standings, a half-game behind Lock Haven because the Bald Eagles have not had their second bye yet. The Rock and Lock Haven are the only two-loss teams in the division and SRU owns the tiebreaker between the two teams. Indiana (Pa.) is fourth in the standings at 6-3, giving the division four teams within two games of each other to decide the three playoff spots with two weeks left in the regular season.

Seton Hill finished the game Saturday with advantages of 32-22 in shots and 20-17 in ground balls, while SRU posted a 14-10 edge in draw controls and an 11-9 advantage in caused turnovers.

Searles led The Rock attack with four goals and one assist to give her 12 points this week in two games. Reagan Richeson added two goals and one assist and Camryn Whipple and Krysta Frankowski each chipped in one goal and one assist. Whipple moved up to 10th on the all-time career scoring ledger at SRU and now has 122 career points.

Charleigh Rondeau handed out one assist and grabbed one ground ball to give her 100 career points and 100 career ground balls. She becomes the 19th player in program history with 100 career points in the first player in program history with at least 200 draw controls, 100 points, 100 ground balls, 50 goals and 50 caused turnovers.

Ulmer and Rachel Mahoney capped the goal scoring with one goal each. Mahoney also had three caused turnovers and three ground balls and Nicole Masi had two caused turnovers to pace the defense.

Gillian O'Rourke had a strong performance in goal, recording more saves than goals allowed, finishing with 13 saves.

Seton Hill switched goalies at halftime and went to Gia Castellano for the second half and overtime. She picked up the win after recording four saves. Allison Hathaway made five saves in the first half. The Griffins were paced on offense by Orlowski, who finished with five goals and one assist after registering a staggering 17 total shots in the game.

Slippery Rock will look to get back in the win column and continue its postseason push Wednesday with a 4 p.m. game on the road at Gannon University.
