Slow start dooms Rock in 17-7 loss to No. 25 Seton Hill

No. 25 Seton Hill raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and SRU never recovered in a 17-7 setback in The Rock's PSAC opener Saturday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 25th-ranked Seton Hill University women's lacrosse team raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on the way to a 17-7 victory over Slippery Rock University Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Rock settled in after the opening 15 minutes and matched the Griffins 7-7 over the final three periods, but could never make up for the first quarter deficit.

Seton Hill picks up its fourth straight win to improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in PSAC West play. The Rock slip to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in PSAC action.

One bright spot for SRU Saturday was the play of true freshman goalie Lily Ventresca, who made her collegiate debut late in the first quarter. She played the final 48:24 and finished with eight saves, two caused turnovers and five ground balls while allowing 10 goals. Ventresca relieved Gillian O'Rourke, who played the first 11:36 and tallied one save while allowing seven goals.

Seton Hill put up advantages of 31-19 in shots, 15-11 in draw controls and 20-15 in ground balls. The Griffins were a perfect 14-for-14 on clear attempts while SRU went 14-of-16.

Rachel Mahoney led the attack with a hat trick and Brooke Wisniewski added two goals to round out the SRU players with multiple points. Charleigh Rondeau and Maddie Blazey each scored one goal and Lauren Searles and Ava Dossier each handed out one assist to cap the point scorers.

Hailey Ohlsen led the SRU defense with three caused turnovers, two ground balls and two draw controls.

Seton Hill was paced by Skylar Orlowski with 10 points on five goals and five assists. Brooklyn Miller added one goal and three assists. Allison Hathaway earned the win in goal with five saves.

Slippery Rock will look to get back in the win column when it hits the road for a pair of PSAC West games next week, first visiting Lock Haven Wednesday for a 3 p.m. game before closing the week at Indiana (Pa.) next Saturday.
