Rock rallies back to defeat Lock Haven 14-12

Slippery Rock rallied back from a 6-0 deficit to hand Lock Haven its first loss of the season with a 14-12 victory in PSAC West action Wednesday on the road.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team ended Lock Haven University's undefeated start to the season with a 14-12 comeback win in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game Wednesday that featured two teams receiving votes in this week's national poll.

The Rock dug themselves into an early hole as Lock Haven jumped out to a 6-0 lead 2:30 into the second quarter, but SRU closed the first half on a 5-0 run to get back into the game and outscored the Bald Eagles 9-6 in the second half for the win.

The victory improves Slippery Rock to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in PSAC West action, while Lock Haven suffers its first loss of the season to drop to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in PSAC West games.

The game-winning goal came from freshman Reagan Richeson with 5:11 left when she broke a 12-12 tie late in the fourth quarter. Ella Koslowski added one more for insurance with 2:35 to play and SRU kept Lock Haven off the scoresheet for the final 8:15 to secure the win.

Richeson saw an increased role for the first time in her career after starting attacker Lauren Searles was shown a red card in the second quarter and was ejected from the game. Richeson rose to the occasion to finish with a team-high four goals after entering the game with one goal over the first six games of the season.

Camryn Whipple assisted the game-winner for what ended up being her seventh assist of the game. She also scored one goal to finish with a game-high eight points. Her seven assists bring her career total to 47, moving her up from ninth to No. 5 on the all-time SRU career ledger. She needs just three more to become the fourth player in program history with 50 assists. Her 21 assists this season currently rank No. 5 on the single-season ledger at SRU.

Isabella Buono finished with two goals and one assist with both of her goals coming late in the game. Her goals combined with Richeson's effort and one assist from Ava Dossier gave The Rock a total of six goals and eight points from first-year players.

Brooke Wisniewski added a hat trick and Sydney Ulmer and Krysta Frankowski each had one goal to cap the goal scorers. Charleigh Rondeau handed out one assist and finished with seven draw controls, two caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Freshman goalie Lily Ventresca made her first career start in goal and allowed six goals with one save before being relieved by Gillian O'Rourke early in the second quarter. O'Rourke earned the win after making five saves the rest of the way and allowing six goals.

Makayla Kelly led Lock Haven with five goals and Gabby Gunnip added four goals. Dana Mirigliano kept the Bald Eagles in the game with nine saves as Slippery Rock posted a 32-23 advantage in shots. The Rock also managed advantages of 16-14 in draw controls and 21-19 in ground balls.

Slippery Rock will play its second straight road game this week with a noon start at Indiana University (Pa.) Saturday.
