Rock football adds 25 on National Signing Day

Slippery Rock announced the addition of 25 new members of The Rock football program Wednesday on National Signing Day, including 10 mid-year transfers and 15 current high school seniors.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University football program announced the addition of 25 student-athletes Wednesday on National Signing Day.

The Rock announced 10 mid-year transfer students that are already enrolled at SRU and will take part in spring practices and 15 incoming high school seniors that signed National Letters of Intent Wednesday to join the program in the fall. SRU added recruits from seven different states, including 14 from Pennsylvania, four from Ohio, two each from Virginia and New Jersey and one each from New York, Maryland and North Carolina. SRU added nine offensive linemen, five defensive linemen, three receivers, three defensive backs, two tight ends, one quarterback, one running back and one linebacker.

"We really feel like the staff did a tremendous job of taking care of our immediate needs with this class," said head coach Shawn Lutz. "Bringing in 10 transfer portal guys is the most we have ever taken mid-year, but we lost four starting offensive linemen and some other key players on both sides and the ball and we felt it was important to get guys with college experience to help fill some of those gaps."

The Rock added four transfer offensive linemen that will likely compete for starting spots with the graduations of Yuriy Hryckowian, Colton Rossi, Jeff Burkhart and Nick Stazer, four players that were recognized as All-PSAC selections during their time at SRU. The four transfer linemen include Division I transfers Julian Sams (Kent State) and Marshall Futrell (Charlotte) and PSAC West transfers Jeff Bonnette (California (Pa.)) and Anthony Jackson (Gannon).

SRU also added two 6-foot-3 transfer wide receivers with Latrell Sutton (Virginia Tech) and Mike Solomon (Notre Dame (Ohio)), one transfer running back in JayJay Jordan (Wilkes) and one transfer tight end in Nassir Jones (Bloomsburg). All of the skill position transfers have collegiate experience. Jones was the first team All-PSAC East tight end in 2023, which means SRU now has both of last year's first team All-PSAC tight ends on its 2024 roster as Kam Kruzelyak also returns. Jordan racked up more than 1,300 all-purpose yards while starting as a freshman at Wilkes last year.

In addition to the eight offensive transfer students announced Wednesday, Slippery Rock also added eight incoming freshmen on the offensive side of the ball. Headlining the list of those recruits is quarterback DaOne Owens out of Massillon Washington High School in Ohio. Owens was rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports and led his team to an Ohio state title in 2023 after rushing for more than 1,300 yards and passing for more than 1,500 yards. The Rock also added five more freshmen offensive linemen with Luke Caldwell from New Hanover High School in North Carolina, Mike Crist from Steel Valley High School, Landon Carbaugh from Shippensburg High School, Matt Muir from Avon High School in Ohio and Soren Stoltzfus from Conestoga Valley High School. The offensive recruits were rounded out by speedy wide receiver Julius Vicari from Seton Hall Prep School in New Jersey and versatile tight end Lou Swartz from West Shamokin High School.

"Offensively, we really needed to fill in some gaps on the offensive line and with four transfers and five incoming freshmen, we feel like we did a really good job of setting ourselves up for long-term success at that position," said Lutz. "DaOne is a special dual-threat QB that could compete for the backup job as a freshman next year. He is the kind of QB we have not had here since Nigel Barksdale. We also feel really good about JayJay Jordan in the running game and the receivers and tight ends that we added. We will go into 2024 with a lot of weapons at the skill positions."

On the defensive side of the ball, Slippery Rock added just two transfer players and both are expected to compete for a starting job right away. Those players are defensive lineman Todd Hill and defensive back Davion Daniels. Hill was a three-time All-Conference linebacker at Division I Duquesne before transferring to Pitt last year. He will play his final season of eligibility at SRU and will likely move up from the linebacker position to become an edge rusher. Daniels played in 42 Division I games at Bowling Green and will play his final season of eligibility at SRU.

In addition to the defensive transfers, Slippery Rock added seven incoming freshmen on the defensive side of the ball. That group includes four defensive linemen in Sincere Shannon from Westinghouse High School, Jett Franz from Central Dauphin High School, Amare Harper from Sto Rox High School and Ryan Gigax from Dover High School in Dover, Ohio.

"We were looking to add a little bit of length and height along the defensive line and all four of these guys are 6-foot-1 or taller," said Lutz. "We really went after a couple of these guys hard because we think there is a lot of potential for this group to become impact players for us. On the transfer side, we think Todd Hill is an immediate impact guy that can help us up front."

SRU added just one freshman linebacker in Kwalil Shepperson from Pleasantville High School in New Jersey and added a pair of incoming freshmen defensive backs, including Lutz' son Gavin Lutz from Grove City High School and Carmen Metcalfe from Penn-Trafford High School.

"It's obviously exciting when you get to sign your son and be part of that experience," said Lutz. "I'm very proud of Gavin for earning his spot on our football team and I look forward to having the chance to see him develop here at SRU. We have a very experienced secondary in 2024 with a couple All-Americans returning, so this group, including Kwalil because he could be more of a run-tackling safety at this level, will really gain a lot of experience from our returners."

Slippery Rock hopes this recruiting class will continue a recent trend that has seen The Rock become one of the most stable and successful programs in Division II. SRU will enter the 2024 season with the second longest active streak of NCAA Playoff appearances and the ninth longest active winning seasons streak among all Division II programs. The Rock are coming off a fifth straight PSAC West title and fifth straight national playoff appearance in 2023 and have averaged 11.0 wins per season over the last five seasons. SRU has been ranked in every national poll since the final rankings in 2018 and finished the 2023 season ranked No. 10 in Division II.

"We like to joke that we don't rebuild here, we just reload," said Lutz. "But, that has been true of our program dating back more than a decade now if you look at the winning seasons streak and the success of our program. We really think this class combined with our returners sets us up to be a really strong football team again in the fall."

Slippery Rock will host its annual Green vs. White Spring Game Friday, April 19 at 6 p.m. The Rock will official open the 2024 season with back-to-back games against NCAA Playoff teams, first hosting the University of New Haven Sept. 7 and then traveling to Shepherd University Sept. 14. The full schedule for the 2024 season is available HERE.
